After violence in Charlottesville, Sullivan says Block Party should be cancelled [sic]

Following a violent weekend in Charlottesville, University President Teresa Sullivan is calling on students to end the annual Wertland Street Block Party.

“In consideration of my assurance that your safety and well-being remain our utmost concern, and given the immeasurable emotion and stress that first responders and community members experienced this past weekend, I am calling on our student community to put an end to the annual Wertland Block Party,” Sullivan said in an email to the University community Tuesday.

At UVa the party rules.

All sorts of emergency vehicles were staged on the east end of Wertland Street around sunset last night. The one person arrested for public intoxication must have really worked hard for the police to arrest them. I suspect that there were more than a few intoxicated students on the street. There is an unspoken exemption for UVa students for many unlawful activities.

Police: One arrest from 2017 Wertland Street block party

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- The Charlottesville Police Department reports only one arrest was made from this year's Wertland Street block party.

Officers say there were crowds of over 2,000 that attended, and one person was charged with public intoxication.

The Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad responded to three rescue calls; one for a fall, and two calls for excessive alcohol consumption.

Police say no other injuries were reported.

Edit to add: Last years party was bigger for sure.

It's mostly for public intoxication, open containers, underage alcohol, jay walking, disorderly conduct, littering and the like. The cops make them pour out the alcohol, tell them to behave better, and rarely make arrests or issue citations.

These parties are tame compared to what went on in the seventies. This particular party gained popularity after strict rules were put in place limiting the Fraternity parties. Every year UVa recommends that students do not go and UVa provides alternatives on the UVa Grounds. Estimated crowd was 6,000 in 2015, 4,000 in 2016 and 2,000 this year. I don't know if this event has a permit.

I missed this one. I think Ms. Chambers is a bit "insensitive"

One UVA student said that email rubbed her the wrong way: "I think crass is a good word. I think insensitive is another one,” said Virginia Chambers.

In the email, Sullivan asked students to consider the "immeasurable stress and emotion" first responders faced after the Unite the Right rally and the three people that died as a result.

“We're definitely tired. We've been up-staffing for a lot of these different events,” said Harrison Brookeman, a volunteer with the Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad.

But, Chambers said the president’s approach was off: “It seemed a little gauche to go from Heather has died to also you should kill block party,” she said.
