Washer and dryer went missing when Councilman David Nygaard broke lease on duplex

VIRGINIA BEACH -- In an odd twist to David Nygaard's City Council saga, the company that rented him an Oceanfront duplex says he made a clean getaway with the unit's washer and dryer when he left.

Nygaard broke his lease on the property three weeks after the November election. The rental company said he took the owner's washer and dryer with him, leaving behind a different pair, which were broken and caused a water leak.

Nygaard denies swapping the appliances and said he did not know who installed the replacement set.

“As to my knowledge, they did it,” he said of the company. “I didn’t do it.”

He rented the duplex to establish residency, but never intended to live in the district.
