28 years later, Old Dominion University students are resurrecting Norfolk's LGBTQ pride festival

You'd have to be living underneath a rock to miss the annual Hampton Roads pride celebration that draws thousands of rainbow-clad residents to Waterside.

It's the area's best-known LGBTQ event, but it's not the first pride gathering to exist in Hampton Roads.

In February 1991, students at Old Dominion University created what is seen by some as the predecessor to the colorful summer fest locals are used to. Called Breaking the Ice, it focused largely on education and support services for LGBTQ residents.

It fizzled out for unknown reasons in the early 2000s, but this year an ODU student organization is resurrecting it under the same name.
