There was ice on the bridge and heavy fog in the area at the time of the crashes, according to the Virginia State Police.
Injuries range from minor to life-threatening, officials said.

Eastbound I-64 is now reported open. Westbound still closed.

Drivers speed and tailgate and don't signal, and unfortunately, I don't see very much enforcement.

I was regularly crossing Afton Mountain on I-64 in the fog and ice. When you can't see the taillights of a car 50 feet ahead you shouldn't be going 70 MPH, but many do. I was often worried about getting hit and would pull in front of a truck creeping up the hill as protection.

More than 60 vehicles were involved in the crash on westbound I-64 near mile marker 240, according to The Virginia Gazette. Virginia State Police said there was fog in the area and ice on Queens Creek Bridge when the crashed occurred just before 8 a.m. The crash site is just east of the Camp Peary exit, about 50 miles east of Richmond.

4:45 PM UPDATE: VSP Investigation Continues into Multi-Vehicle, Chain-Reaction Crashes on Interstate 64 in York County
Virginia State Police continues to investigate a series of multi-vehicle, chain reaction crashes that occurred Sunday morning (Dec. 22) in York County.
At 7:51 a.m. Sunday, Virginia State Police received the first calls about a multi-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of I-64 on the Queens Creek bridge near the 239 mile marker. Due to icy conditions on the bridge and severe fog, the crashes continued in both the westbound and then the eastbound lanes of I-64. At this stage of the extensive crash investigation, state police have confirmed that at least 69 vehicles were involved in the crashes that occurred in both directions of I-64. No charges have been placed at this time, as the multiple crash investigations remain ongoing.
At least 51 individuals from those vehicles were transported to regional hospitals, to include Riverside Doctors' Hospital in Williamsburg, Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center and VCU Medical Center in Richmond. The majority of injuries were minor, with 11 individuals being treated for serious injuries. There are still no reported fatalities related to the crashes.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office, James City County Police Department, VDOT and seven fire departments, to include York County Department of Fire and Life Safety and James City County Fire Department, responded to assist with the critical incident.
