Governor Ralph Northam announced Monday afternoon that schools will be closed for the remainder of the school year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He is also closing nonessential businesses and banning gatherings of people in groups of more than 10. Newsleader.com will have more details soon.

The announcement was made during his daily news conference at 2 p.m. Northam had previously closed all K-12 schools through this week, March 27, to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.

"Today I am directing all schools in Virginia to remain closed at least through the end of this academic year," Northam said.

Recreation and entertainment (think cinemas, race tracks, etc) will close starting 0000 Wednesday.

So will personal non-health services requiring close contact (e,g. barbershops).

Restaurants and beverage places will be limited to takeout, curbside and delivery.

Non-essential brick and mortar stores can't have more than 10 patrons inside, must practice social distancing and sanitation.

Food stores, pharmacies, childcare and other essential services must sanitize and practice SD.

ABC stores are exempt but must clean and do SD.
