My friend lives in the VA side of DC. He says that North Virginia is actually quite liberal, and thus, the people from the rest of the state tend to be more Dixie-ish, as they fear Northern VA might hook up with DC and become a more Northern state. Is there truth to this?

(131,063 posts)but its certainly true that NoVa is significantly different from rest of the state. NoVa = DC suburbs, = those employed IN DC = lots of Dems.

(978 posts)I live in Maryland and have lots of Liberal friends who live in Northern Virginia. My wife works in Northern VA in Alexandria and alot of her coworkers are on the Liberal side judging from discussions I've listened to at her work parties.
I also have some energy sustainable friends who live in solar homes in the mountains of Virginia and they are pretty liberal. So you have pockets of liberals in southern and central Virginia and quite a few Liberals in Northern Virginia.
Those of us in the MD/DC/VA area were watching VA closely during the last election hoping it would go blue since a Northern VA has a big population and tends to be Liberal.
Also affecting Northern VA are federal govt jobs. There are tons of Federal contractors depending on federal contracts. The Republicans want to cut alot of programs that employ these workers so they tend to vote for who is going to keep that money coming.
I'm not sure about the state's capitol in Richmond. Could be mostly red. I don't know.

(6,819 posts)Yes, NoVa includes large numbers of people from other states and from other countries. Tidewater includes a large armed services population. The rest of the state is more native-bred.
The question of the day- how did Cuccinelli get elected to the senate from NoVa?
