Washington State Ferry fare increases coming Oct. 1, then again in May

Starting Wednesday, Washington State Ferry travelers will be coughing up a few extra cents to take a trip on any of the 10 routes; a similar fare increase will hit travelers again next year.

For all vehicles, fares will jump up 2.5%. Walk-on passengers will have to pay 2% than they did before Oct. 1. That makes what was once an $8.50 trip to Bainbridge Island from Seattle, now $8.65. For drivers, the cost goes from $11.80 to $12.35. Oversize vehicles on the Anacortes to British Columbia route will have a trip that costs them 5% more.

A full list of fares for Oct. 1 to May 1, 2020 can be found here.

For most, popular routes in the Puget Sound -- Bainbridge/Bremerton to Seattle, Kingston to Edmonds -- walk-on passengers pay one way, but vehicles pay for both trips.

On May 1, the fares will increase by another 2 and 2.5% for walk-on passengers and vehicles.

the state highway system. Highways don't run on ferry dust either. Some highways cost a lot: the passes are kept open during the winter; some highways wash out every year; bridges are repaired. Users if those highways do not pay more. Ferries are the only ones with a fee system.
