EVERETT Its a face-off that happens far too often: car versus pedestrian. And when cars dont yield to people using crosswalks, the pedestrian always loses.
Pedestrians end up being the worst affected even if theyre crossing properly, said officer Aaron Snell, an Everett Police Department spokesman.
Everetts Traffic Safety Unit set out to catch cars in the act in late September making 22 traffic stops and issuing 18 citations over the course of a week. Officers were looking for drivers not yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks.
The Traffic Safety Unit emphasizes specific laws and situations. Earlier in September, the focus was on school zones. In 2018, officers went after jaywalking.
The department gave the public a heads-up on Twitter before beginning the patrols this time around.

(20,583 posts)People in cars are focused on other cars. Now I am noticing a new move - I will make you stop while I do what I want, the rules be damned. Pedestrians don't have a chance.
Years ago I had to walk everywhere (no car) in Seattle. It is frightening. I usually carried an umbrella which I used to tap cars who were about to run over me in crosswalks.

(4,935 posts)even at intersections with new flashing lights embedded in the road indicating someone is using the crosswalk. As a result, I try very hard to be aware of anyone at a crosswalk. I'm also courteous and aware of bicycle riders (having a friend that was cut-off by one and suffered multiple broken ribs and a punctured lung).
What I don't like is all these people on scooters (Lime, Bird, etc.) They really do ride around like they own the road...going the wrong way down one-way streets, riding on the sidewalk (which is illegal where I live) and darting out from parked or stopped cars.
Pedestrians and bicyclists are much more keenly aware of their surroundings..but scooter riders seem to not care one bit.
