Washington voters narrowly rejecting affirmative action measure after first returns

A controversial measure that would reverse a decades-long ban on affirmative action was too close to call after initial election results were released Tuesday evening.

Washington voters are narrowly rejecting Referendum 88 with 51.18% of the vote. The "no" side held a 21,594-vote lead.

Referendum 88 would change what factors organizations can consider when interviewing applicants for public education, employment, and contracting through the use of affirmative action.

The referendum was spurred by Initiative 1000, which the state Legislature passed last spring. That measure reversed a 21-year-old ban on affirmative action in Washington state.

There appears to be a lot of Asian opposition to affirmative action. Ron Obvious Nov 2019 #2

I didn't think it would be a close one, it looks like drumpf has enlivened the deplorables in our state.

But, it's over when it's over, I'll wait and see

Not that surprising, really - they might be the most disadvantaged by it. They certainly don't benefit much.

I live out in the country and its all white folk all the time here, I'm not exposed to other avenues of thought so much

Kitsap is all military and my last job was at Fort Lewis so there's a large amount of gung ho in the air in my life and it's not multi cultural

But my parents raised me to be non racist so that along with my life experiences allow me to see through the fog of fake people

I celebrate everyone except for the idiots but that's self inflicted

And I don't have any time for them
