Proposal to create regional homelessness authority moves forward

A proposal to create a regional homelessness agency in King County took a step forward Thursday, but it could still face a difficult path moving forward.

King County's Regional Policy Committee on Thursday unanimously approved the legislation that would create the King County Regional Homelessness Authority, an administrative agency on homelessness that would receive funding from both Seattle and King County.

The proposal -- which has been in the works for months -- includes some key differences from what was originally proposed and will still need to be approved by both the King County Council and Seattle City Council before it would go into effect.

Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles, who brought the legislation forward, said the process for creating the proposal has been "incredibly complex" and has involved people with many different points of view on best steps to take.
