Rep. Laurie Jinkins is first woman House Speaker in Washington history

State Rep. Laurie Jinkins, D-Tacoma on Monday became the first woman and first lesbian to serve as Speaker of the Washington House of Representatives.

Jinkins and other women lawmakers wore white at the noon ceremony in Olympia to mark the 100th birthday of women's suffrage.

"Today represents another step toward inclusion, toward more seats at the table," Jinkins told colleagues.

Actually, Washington has taken many steps in recent years. The state's two U.S. Senators and four House members are women. The mayor of Seattle and president of the University of Washington are lesbians.
