King County to collect 14 percent more in property taxes this year

Friday is Valentine's Day, when King County will begin sending its annual tax bills, which will be higher this year.

Changes in Washington state's school funding formula will lead to a 13.7% increase in property tax collections in the county, the county Assessor's Office said Thursday.

Overall property tax collections this tax year will be $6.3 billion, an increase of $767 million from the previous year. The total county assessed value rose 5.9% to $642.5 billion.

The increase is primarily due to two changes in education funding made by the state legislature: an increase in the statewide education levy and authority for school districts to collect enhanced local levies.
