Stolen firearm reports down, gun lock giveaways up in Everett

EVERETT — Police have handed out hundreds of gun locks and received fewer firearm theft reports since 2018.

The Everett Police Department program began as a result of executive orders Mayor Cassie Franklin issued after she took office to address violence.

“Properly securing firearms is part of keeping guns safe and out of the hands of youth,” Everett Police Department spokesman Aaron Snell said in an email.

Cases of property and violent crime — aggravated assault, murder, non-negligent manslaughter, rape and robbery — dropped between 2008 and 2018, according to FBI data.

For those who do not know, a firearm lock fits inside the trigger guard of a gun and does no more good than putting a padlock on your steering wheel to prevent the theft of your car.

The value of a firearm lock is in keeping kids having instant access to daddy's Smith & Wesson. It locks the trigger, it doesn't lock up the gun.

Firearm vaults, or safes may keep all but the most professional thieves from stealing guns. Even a good quality firearm safe can be defeated in minutes by a savvy crook with a $75.00 tool available at any hardware store. Most guns are stolen because they are left in places like glove compartments of cars, or on the table by the bed when a house is being burglarized.
