A $39.2 million federal grant, part of Congress' big COVID-19 relief package, will go to the Washington Department of Transportation to maintain commuter ferry service across Puget Sound.
Crossing waters is vital to commuting and recreating in Washington state. Washington State Ferries served 23.9 million passengers in 2019, but has been hit with a ridership decline of as much as 75% during stay-at-home orders enacted to curb spread of the novel coronavirus.
The getaway ridership has begun to recover, witness two-hour ferry lines on the Mukilteo-Whidbey Island run last weekend, but Washington is still staying and working from home.
"Ferries are an essential part of everyday life for many Washingtonians, connecting residents to work, school and family and friends," said Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., in announcing the money. "While Washingtonians stay home to fight COVID-19, we want to make sure this critical piece of our state's infrastructure stays up and running."

(15,952 posts)Itd be different if there were no alternative to get where you are going. Perhaps give that money to unemployed and let people drive on the roads instead of on car ships.
