North Cascades Highway is open: A pandemic guide if you drive
A newly plowed North Cascades Highway has long been a magnet over Memorial Day weekend, a time to get outdoors, and get reminded of why we live in Washington.
The COVID-19 pandemic has put a crimp on all that. The highway reopened last weekend, but its stellar attractions remain shut down. If captured by wanderlust, here is what to expect.
A Seattle group, fresh off camping at Kalaloch in Olympic National Park over Memorial Day 2019, laid plans to reconvene this year at Colonial Creek Campground at the south end of Diablo Lake in the North Cascades National Park complex. The campground gives access to glorious early season hiking. But the park remains closed "until further notice."
All classes and conferences at the North Cascades Institute digs, beautifully tucked into forests behind Diablo Lake, are canceled through June of 2020.
