(25,962 posts)When I lived in Portland, I used Mt St Helens as a weather indicator. If I could see Mt St Helens, it was going to rain. If I couldn't see Mt St Helens, it was already raining.
On edit: I coulda said Mt Hood, but seeing that this is the WA Group, I thought it should have a WA reference.

(51,907 posts)I posted it here because I'm in WA. With total cloud cover, you still knew where both were supposed to be, right? Probably Mt Adams as well. In Seattle, you point to Mt Rainier and Mt Baker.

(25,962 posts)Mt Adams was visible occasionally as well, but it was kinda 'shy' compared to the other two. I lived in Portland before St Helens went *BOOM!*, and it was so beautiful & symmetrical. I visited afterward and was shocked at the scale of destruction on the mountain and surrounding countryside.

(25,699 posts)It's not rain unless it's horizontal.
Then again I also get a laugh out of my fellow Washingtonians who tell me, "it's cold outside!" As a former Alaskan, it is not "cold" until your hair freezes.
Abd be sure to look with contempt upon anyone who tries to feed you pink salmon. "Oh, you mean cat food?"

(3,266 posts)a year and a half ago, I can tell you where and at what time of year to find salmonberries and blackberries - still need to learn about the salmon. Here's my contribution: If you know the difference between fog and marine layer, you may be from the Pacific Northwest COAST.
edited to add: my handle is "PNWest"... shows how much I love my adopted home

(8,554 posts)and there's a volcano sitting directly behind it.
I used to live in a cabin about half way up that "hill" and when I first moved there years ago, I was stunned to learn that it's official name even dubbed it a Hill. I tried debating this with locals, explaining that Mt. Washington in New Hampshire is some 6,200 feet tall and is the highest mountain in the East, so how could our massive little piece of paradise be considered a "hill".
Several decades later, I would never be so foolish as to attempt such a conversation and I now look for snow up top there to tell me if it's gonna be cold enough outside for a hat, that is, if it's "out".

(8,554 posts)to that guilt thing with the aluminum can; this list is rather old, eh?
I can add one, too:
You will haul a virtual ton of saved styrofoam more than a hundred miles, just to get it to a proper recycling center.
Also, (remembering this list from when it first came out) I used to haul my $800 mountain bike on the back of my $200 car.

(51,907 posts)--cost $20 total at a thrift store, right?
countryjake
(8,554 posts)I have been seen out and about wearing a pair of Birkenstocks (always with good fuzzy socks), tho, I paid $84 for them back in 1983 (same year I bought my mountain bike) and I think that they must be the best cared for pair of shoes in the entire state. The ones I had before them are now my rainy day birkys, still fairly presentable, too.
I can't even remember the last time I bought anything brand new or even shopped for clothes at a store other than a thrift store. My ducks cost me two bucks at Goodwill; got me a practically brand new pair of mud boots at a garage sale last year for 50 cents; and my favorite sneakers I found hanging in a cedar tree on this property (climbing up to get them is a whole 'nother story)!
