How holiday travel is shaping up at Sea-Tac Airport
This holiday season could see airlines move more passengers than ever, but on fewer total flights than they operated in 2019.
That's the trend at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, where there were 8.3% fewer flights this year compared with the same period in 2019, according to data from Cirium Inc. However, flights this year flew slightly more passengers than four years ago.
While industry analysts say pent-up demand could make 2023 a record year for holiday travel, a Business Journals analysis of Cirium data found total flight operations at the nation's 150 largest airports are expected to be down 10% compared to 2019.
But the total number of seats will be up 3% at those airports, illustrating an industry shift toward larger planes and fewer flight operations as airlines adapt in the post-pandemic world.

After spending a year in Vietnam and 23 hours flying across the Pacific, I arrived at Sea-Tac, jet-lagged almost to the point of exhaustion, spotted the Eastern Airlines counter, bought a ticket to Atlanta, and six hours later I was home (about 80 miles north of Atlanta).
That was in December of 1967. I haven't been back to Seattle since, but I'd love to visit sometime.
