1. How rid District 5 of McMorris-Rogers?

It looks as though Dave Wilson may be running as a right leaning independent. Should he be supported to break the republican votes? How much, if any, momentum does Pakootas have? Last time, I thought Cowan had the best chance to unseat Kathy. I know he had a lot of name recognition. I do not feel as good about the possibility of unseating her this time.

5. Demonstrate against Gingrich (campaigning for Reichert) 9/25 in Issaquah
Sun Sep 14, 2014, 08:30 PM
Sep 2014

What do Newt Gingrich and Rep. Dave Reichert have in common?

They both are fans of government shutdowns!

That might be why former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is coming to Issaquah to host a fundraiser for Dave Reichert on September 25th.

And we’ll be there to send Newt and Dave a message.

Join Democrats for a Rally to Reject Reichert:

WHAT: 5th District Democrats’
Rally to Reject Reichert

WHERE: Hilton Garden Inn
1800 NW Gilman Blvd.
Issaquah, WA 98027

WHEN: Thursday, September 25th
4:00 pm

RSVP to chair@5thdems.org

It’s not a surprise that Newt Gingrich is coming to Washington for Dave Reichert.

Reichert has voted 75% of the time with the Tea Party that Newt Gingrich helped to inspire.

Join Democrats on September 25th, and send Dave Reichert the message that we have a more progressive vision for our state and country.

Thank you,

Karen Deal
Executive Director
Washington State Democrats

7. Arguing with your conservative uncle about I-594
Sat Sep 27, 2014, 06:54 AM
Sep 2014

Conservative Uncle says: Gun laws don't work because criminals don't follow laws.

You take a deep breath, smile, and say: That's like saying fences don't work because your dog escaped once.

In reality, background checks have been effective at keeping guns out of the hands of criminals. Background checks have already stopped 40,000 illegal gun sales.1 Unfortunately, the Internet and gun shows make it easier for domestic abusers and convicted felons to use the background check loophole to buy guns. I–594 will stop this decay of our gun laws by requiring the same background checks for all gun purchases.

Every family should have the freedom to be safe in their home and their community. After so many shootings and tragedies, closing the background check loophole is the least we can do to keep our communities safe.

Conservative Uncle says: I–594 is badly written and will make it illegal for me to hand my gun to a friend at a shooting range or while hunting.

You smile again and say: This is a good example of something that isn't true. I–594 specifically exempts short term transfers from background checks, including families out hunting or friends at a firing range. In fact, the FBI has already said that simply handing a gun to someone else to try out would be exempt.2 What I–594 will do is stop the erosion of our existing laws that allow criminals to buy guns on Craigslist or at gun shows without a background check. Colorado passed a similar background check law last year and it has already stopped many illegal gun sales.

Conservative Uncle says: This is really just a way to confiscate my guns and create a gun registry of legal gun owners.

You say: Actually, nothing will change for legal gun owners. You still have the freedom to buy and own as many guns as you wish, and there's still no registry of your guns. The only thing that will change is every gun sale will go through the same quick and simple background check licensed dealers have used for decades. Unfortunately, the gun lobby is saying this to confuse and distract voters about I–594.

Conservative Uncle says: The only way to prevent violence is to arm law abiding citizens.

You say: Can we all agree that we need to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and convicted criminals?. We've already seen that background checks have been effective in Washington and Colorado. Now we need to close the loophole in our existing law that allows criminals to buy guns on the Internet and at gun shows without a background check.

Conservative Uncle says: This is all really Obama's fault.

You say: How about those Seahawks?

Question 11e on a form 4473 asks, "Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance?"

This form is a federal form, and unless something has changed, isn't marijuana still illegal at the federal level?

8. Republican Andy Hill a no-show at NARAL’s 45th District candidate forum in Redmond
Fri Oct 10, 2014, 07:38 AM
Oct 2014
http://www.nwprogressive.org/weblog/2014/10/republican-andy-hill-a-no-show-at-narals-45th-district-candidate-forum-in-redmond.html

Last night, NARAL Pro-Choice Washington held a candidate forum in Redmond to give candidates running for the Washington State Legislature in the 45th District an opportunity to share their views on women’s health and reproductive rights.

The six candidates seeking to represent the district in the 2015-2016 Legislature were all invited to participate, but unfortunately, only the Democrats (Matt Isenhower, Larry Springer, and Roger Goodman) showed up.

,snip>

Actually, history has shown that when advocates of women’s health back Republicans, they get burned. Steve Litzow, Andy Hill, and Rodney Tom were in a position to bring up the Reproductive Parity Act in the Senate during each of the two sessions their caucus has controlled the floor. They failed to deliver.

The legislation could have passed with what Tom likes to call a “philosophical majority”, possibly even without Hill. But it was never brought to the floor for a vote. (It did, of course, pass in the Democratically-controlled state House.)

There is no evidence that Andy Hill supports reproductive rights, including a woman’s right to terminate a pregnancy. Hill does not even advertise himself as pro-choice or pro-liberty. Instead, he has allowed (and perhaps encouraged) The Seattle Times to do that for him, while avoiding the issue on the campaign trail, presumably so as to avoid offending his base. Hill is trying to have it both ways.

I’ll add that there is no such thing as a moderate Republican, or a moderate Democrat, for that matter. The mass media loves the label moderate, but it’s useless. It doesn’t stand for anything. Progressive/liberal and conservative refer to a system of values, principles, and policy directions. Moderate doesn’t. There is no moderate worldview. There is no consistency to what so-called moderates believe.

10. Write In Rick Williams for King County Prosecutor.
Wed Oct 15, 2014, 01:58 AM
Oct 2014

From an activist working on justice for John T Williams--

I am inviting others to join me in writing in Rick Williams for King County Prosecutor.

Dan Satterberg is running unopposed for King County Prosecutor. This is Satterberg’s first re-election bid since he refused to prosecute SPD Officer Ian Birk for shooting John T. Williams. The SPD’s Firearms Review Board found the shooting unjustified, and well-qualified attorneys urged prosecution. Satterberg would not budge.

Rick Williams tells me that others have the same idea and will also be writing in his name. He underscores that he still lives every day in pain because of what happened to his brother.

A significant number of write-in votes for Rick Williams would be a slap on Satterberg’s hands. With luck, it will also get some media coverage.

Please join me in writing in Rick Williams for King County Prosecutor.
