King County Proposition 1

A couple of LTEs

According to the Argonne National Laboratory, idling uses 0.2-0.5 gallons/hr, depending on age and make of car. If Proposition 1 fails, count on a minimum of an extra 20,000 cars on the road per day. If you don't want to pay an extra $40/year to keep those cars off the road, you are going to be paying anyway with higher gas bills, not to mention a lot more aggravation and engine wear and tear.

If you idle an extra 5 minutes a day during your commute, assuming 20 work days per month, you will spend an extra 20 hours per year idling, thus using an extra 4 to 10 galloss of gas a year. At today's price for regular fuel of $3.65/gallon, that means you will be paying an extra $14.60 to $36.50 per year. Idle an extra 10 minutes a day and you pay $29.20-$73.00 per year

It looks to me like Proposition 1 is a bargain at $40/year, and that's not counting the low income rebate which you get if you are a single parson earning less that $31K/year or a family earning less than $55K/year.

Geezernomics 101 and Proposition 1

Most seniors will be eligible for car fee rebates under Proposition 1. Dividing senior housholds into quintiles, the lowest quintile has incomes from $0 to $12,080, the second quintile incomes from $12,080 to $19,980, the middle quintile from $19,980 to $31,300, the second highest fifth from $31,300 to $55,890 and the top fifth over $55,890

You get a low income rebate if you are a single parson earning less that $31K/year or a family earning less than $55K/year. This means that 60% of single seniors and 80% of couples will be eligible for the rebate.

The data on household income is from Economic Status of the Elderly in the United States, by Virginia P. Reno and Benjamin Veghte

Vote Yes on
Prop 1
April 22

What will happen
if Prop 1 fails?

Do you drive to work?
Expect an additional 20-30,000 cars per day between you and your destination.

Do you ride the bus to work?
Expect standing room only at best, cutting or elimination of your route at worst.

Proposition 1 is a necessary and affordable investment in our economy, environment and quality of life.

Save buses and fix roads across King County

Business and labor are united to keep our economy on the move

Endorsed by the King County Labor Council and the Downtown Seattle Association

Proposition 1 will

 Dedicate 40% of revenue to roadway safety, preservation and maintenance—critical funding for EVERY city and rural area

 Replace expiring Metro funding—stopping planned cuts that will affect 80% of bus riders. It will keep 30,000 cars off our congested streets, and make sure working families, seniors, students, and people with disabilities have a way to get around

 Create a $1.25 low income bus fare and a rebate for low income car owners

Our growing region can’t afford more traffic gridlock and deteriorating roadways. With 400,000 daily rides, Metro helps to keep us moving.

Thanks to the moronic voters of King County for defeating this. After all, the only thing the opponents had to do was repeat "$60 Car Tabs!!!" over and over again, and it never had a chance. Because, after all, "we're already taaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaxed to deeeeeeeeeeeeeeath!!!!!" (here in a state with some of the lowest taxes in the nation).

Because of the service cuts that will follow from this, the odds are great that I'm going to have to drive my wife an hour's round-trip to the nearest bus stop every morning and evening. Yep, that's two hours a day (not including the hour or so extra she'll be spending on the bus after that), and about $4 of gas every day, too.

And, in case you may be asking "why, if you're so dependent on public transportation, didn't you make sure you were living near it?"...the quick answer is "we did!" Seriously, when we were looking into buying a house, we made a point of checking out all the bus lines into Seattle, and only considered houses that were within walking distance of a stop with regular service into town. Sadly, that plan only lasted until the next time the voters decided that "we're taaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaxed to deeeeeeeeeeeeeeath!!!!!" and forced service cuts that eliminated all the routes to that bus stop. Suddenly, we went from within walking distance to three-and-a-half miles from the nearest stop -- and, after yesterday's vote, that will probably be increasing to twenty-five to thirty miles. And, no, we can't afford to sell our house and move closer.

On the bright side, we get to save around twenty bucks per year in license fees. Whoopee!

During the campaign all one ever heard about is bus routes that were threatened. How about the need to fix such structures as the South Park bridge?

I live in Snohomish County so I didn't have a vote, however there seems to be plenty of blame to go around on both sides.

And those numbers were calculated using $3.65/gallon as the gas price.
