Thanks to warm temperatures and lots of sun over the past month, these purple and white tulips were found blooming Wednesday in a field off Best Road, several weeks earlier than usual. The annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival takes place for the entire month of April, but nature's part of the show has already begun.

(1,005 posts)but there are still many flocks of swans in the open fields. In the 30 years we've lived here only a few stragglers remained when the tulips were blooming. The rest had headed north. Apparently the flowers and birds are on different clocks now.

(8,554 posts)I've still got flocks of snowbirds under my feeders...they're preparing to migrate, as usual, but after a week like this one, I'm wondering if they're going to go early.
I noticed two weekends ago that the trumpeters seemed to be dwindling in number in the flats, but I guess that doesn't necessarily mean that they've headed North. We'll be going down to Mt. Vernon tomorrow and I'll be checking out some of the fields where they're always plentiful.
As dry as it is, I can't imagine the swans will stick around much longer.
