4. Demo against oil trains in Vancouver 1/5
Mon Dec 28, 2015, 07:12 PM
Dec 2015

Big Oil wants to build the largest crude-by-rail terminal in North America right on the Columbia River, in Vancouver. Not only would this harm our climate, it would put countless communities at risk from fiery oil train accidents.

We've succeeded in stopping or delaying similar projects in the past, because people showed up to tell decision-makers NO.

Now, we need hundreds of concerned citizens like you to join us on January 5 to say NO to this dangerous project -- will you join us?

Here are the details:

WHAT: Public hearing on the proposed Tesoro-Savage crude oil terminal at the Port of Vancouver

WHEN: Tuesday, January 5, 1 - 11 p.m. (or until the last speaker), with a rally outside the hearing during a break at 5 p.m.

WHERE: Clark County Event Center at the Fairgrounds, Hall B, 17402 NE Delfel Road, Ridgefield, WA 98642 (Just outside of Vancouver, WA)

The proposed Tesoro-Savage crude-by-rail terminal at the Port of Vancouver would result in 360,000 barrels of explosive crude oil rolling through our communities in Washington and neighboring states every single day.

And when that oil is offloaded at this facility, it would then be shipped out to sea via huge oil tankers on the Columbia River. Any oil spills on the Columbia or on our coast would be disastrous for the environment, our economy, and local communities. It's clear that by rail or by sea, with this much oil moving through the region, an oil spill disaster is inevitable.

There's still time to stop Big Oil in its tracks. Decision-makers want to hear from the public -- Washingtonians, Oregonians, and anyone else concerned about these plans -- to learn what you think of this dangerous proposal. We need your help to stop this dangerous oil terminal, and protect the Northwest's communities, rivers, salmon, and coastline.

Join us for this important public meeting on January 5, near Vancouver, WA, to show decision-makers that we don't want this oil, or the danger that comes with it. RSVP today!

If this all seems like déjà vu, it's because this is just one of a flood of proposed oil terminals in the Pacific Northwest. This is the biggest one yet though, and it can be stopped. In fact, by standing together, Washingtonians and Oregonians have already stopped eight fossil fuel terminals affecting the Lower Columbia, and delayed nine others.

Let's stop another one.

Thank you for protecting our communities,

Alex Harris
Organizing Representative, Sierra Club

5. Support environmental activists in court in Lynnwood 1/11
Sun Jan 3, 2016, 12:23 AM
Jan 2016

On September 2nd, 2014, five fighters for climate and against fossil fuel expansion in Washington State took our resistance to the next level. We blockaded a train used to ship explosive Bakken oil for eight hours in the BNSF Delta rail yard in Everett. We were inspired by those who have participated in acts of peaceful civil disobedience before us, and we hope our act will continue to inspire others.

Known as the Delta 5, we are headed to trial for our blockade. We are not simply trying to get out of facing the consequences of our actions. We did this to shed light on the consequences that are before us all. Help us ramp up this peaceful but powerful rise of the people to say we cannot continue with "business as usual".

That's why we'll be packing the courtroom the week of January 11th at Snohomish County South District Court 20520 68th Ave W, Lynnwood

Please join us. Click here to RSVP
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1t4_FXiHrCGGCWB__-ytfeNoAzO-UsiQ_lza8SQYxLuA/viewform?c=0&w=1

We head into another comment period for fossil fuel expansion for the Tesoro Savage project , and feel the sting of another loss to big oil. The industry persuaded Congress to lift the ban on crude oil exports. As our protections erode we realize that peaceful civil disobedience is the way deep change has been sparked over history, and will continue to be.

While we are fighting the expansion of refineries and export terminals, the Delta 5 remind us that to seriously address the climate crisis, we need to be shutting down our fossil fuel infrastructure and keeping that oil in the ground. That's why we'll be pursuing a unique defense in court, arguing that their blockade was morally - and legally - justifiable given the imperatives of the climate crisis.

We are all the Delta 5!

You can read more about their action, our legal strategy and RSVP to attend the trial on the Delta 5 website: delta5trial.org

If you are not available to com during the week of the trial, Join the Delta 5 on Sunday January 10th at 10:30 am as they celebrate Climate justice Sunday at Woodland Park Presbyterian Church 225 North 70th Street. Abby will be preaching and there will be a blessing of the Delta 5.

13. MLK day housing presentation in Seattle 1/18
Sat Jan 16, 2016, 10:24 PM
Jan 2016

Upcoming Events:

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR DAY MARCH

JANUARY 18, 2016 - GARFIELD HIGH SCHOOL

MLK Seattle 2016 theme "WE HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE CHANGE"

This year the new united group, Our City Coalition, will host a workshop at Garfield before the march. The content will focus on the high cost of being price out from uncontrolled development, illegal foreclosures and evictions, lack of rent control, anti-homeless policies, tent cities, and transit inequalities.

Workshop Title: "State Of Emergency: Uniting to Fight For Change in Rights for Housing, Homelessness and Transit"

Workshops go on from 9:30 am until 11:00 am so get to Garfield early!

Facilitator: Cindy Domingo, LELO

Our City Coalition Panelists:

Jarvis Capucion, SHARE

Ryan Miller, Nickelsville

Anitra Freeman, WHEEL (Womens Equality and Enhancement League)

Bang Nguyen, SAFE (Standing Against Foreclosure and Eviction)

Scott Myers, Transit Riders Union

Seattle is the fastest growing development city in the country, but also the fastest growing homeless population. In the recent declaration by Seattle and King County of a State of Emergency on Homelessness, Our City Coalition organizations had claimed we have since 2009. We are addressing how the free market, uncontrolled development and government has failed us, then identify and discuss with the audience what the root causes are. Some of these root causes include the rising cost of living, unaffordable housing market, lack of rent control giving rise to slumlords, market failures, bank fraud, foreclosures, evictions, homelessness, shelters, tent cities and transit inequalities. The discussion will then follow with what the community can do to remedy these conditions and the alternatives to the current failed system. We the people must rely on ourselves, as a community, to help one another rise up to these challenges and like Martin Luther King, Jr.'s work, we have the power to make change.

15. Community forums continue for min. wage/sick leave measure
Thu Feb 4, 2016, 06:16 AM
Feb 2016
http://www.thestand.org/2016/02/community-forums-continue-for-min-wagesick-leave-measure/?'
'
Labor, faith, and community groups have come together in 2016 to support working families by raising Washington’s minimum wage and expanding paid sick and safe leave throughout the state. A ballot initiative has been filed to raise the minimum wage incrementally to $13.50/hour and allow all workers to earn up to seven days of paid sick and safe leave per year.

The Raise Up Washington campaign, formed to support the initiative, will launch an ambitious grassroots volunteer petition drive later this month to collect the roughly 250,000 valid signatures needed by early July to qualify the initiative for this fall’s ballot.

In recent weeks, community forums have been held to learn more about the effort and how to get involved, and the response has been tremendous. So more community forums have been scheduled, including TONIGHT at 5:30 p.m. in Everett. Union members and other supporters are invited and encouraged to attend:

Please join the Seattle for Everyone coalition on March 2nd, from 5:00-7:00pm, to help kick off a city-wide effort to support increased affordable housing and livability in our communities.

Our city has reached a crossroads. We can continue on a path toward more displacement, increased traffic congestion, and rising homelessness, or we can come together as a community to build a Seattle for everyone—a city where growth is thoughtfully leveraged to create more affordable housing and increase the convenience, livability, health, and sustainability of our city. The choices we make now will steer our city’s future for generations to come.

No act is too small or insignificant to make a difference. We hope you'll join us at Sole Repair, to learn about ways you can plug into the conversation and help realize the landmark recommendations from the HALA action plan. It's essential that we make our pro-density, pro-affordability voices heard. Appetizers and cash bar available!

Stations will be set up to provide more information, where you can learn ways to get involved.
You’ll have a chance to hear from fellow HALA supporters who will share their stories.
Come find out how to sign up in staying involved, including other fun ways to show your support.

Fri Mar 4, 2016, 12:18 AM
Mar 2016

As the Supreme Court hears the most significant abortion rights and access case in decades, we at CAIR want you to mark your calendar, because it's time for...

The CAIR Project’s 2016 Bowl-a-Thon!
Sunday, April 24
3pm-6pm
Seattle, WA (The Garage on Capitol Hill)

YOU are officially invited and also, we'd love for you to be a team captain. It's easy! Do you support abortion access? Do you have at least three friends who do too? Boom. There’s your team.

http://bowlathon.nnaf.org/fundpage.asp?BranchID=107

Being a captain is cake—we'll provide everything you need, including emails and social media posts for you to send your teammates, friends and networks. Copy. Paste. Fund abortion.

Bask in the glory of the amazing team names so far. What will yours be?

Make Abortion Great Again
The Red Vadge of Courage
The Elephant in the Womb
Vadge of Honor

This year our goal is to raise $40,000, which means we need more team captains than ever before.

What’s that? You want to sign up? Yay! Here's how to get started:

Go to the Seattle or Boise event page and register your team.
Invite friends to join your team. You can have as many people on your team as you like; eight will be able to bowl. A template email for recruiting bowlers is below.
Stay tuned for fundraising tips, tricks and templates in the weeks to come.

Yours,
Abby, Anita, Ellie, Emily, Faye, Patricia, Peter, Selya, Trina
The CAIR Project Board

CAPTAIN’S TEMPLATE EMAIL TO BOWLERS
Subject: STRIKE down barriers to abortion access with me

Hi [NAME],

I'm bowling for abortion access and I want you to join me!

I'm putting together a Bowl-a-Thon team to support The CAIR Project, the Pacific Northwest's abortion fund. CAIR runs a hotline and provides financial assistance to people who need help paying for their abortion care.

THE DETAILS
WHAT: The CAIR Project 2016 Bowl-a-Thon
WHO: You, me and the raddest abortion rights advocates in town
WHEN: Sunday, April 24, 3pm-6pm
WHERE: The Garage on Capitol Hill (Seattle) / TBD (Boise)
WHY: Because a person’s ability to decide when and whether to have a child shouldn't depend on her paycheck

What does it mean to be on a Bowl-a-Thon team?
Bowling for abortion access is a blast and it's easy. There is no minimum commitment--you just raise what you can to help CAIR fund as many people as possible. Here's what you do:

Register to join our team, [INSERT YOUR TEAM NAME], here: http://bowlathon.nnaf.org/fundpage.asp?BranchID=107.
Reach out to your friends and family (the CAIR Project will provide us with fundraising templates, tips and tricks). People are extremely passionate about this issue--you'll be surprised at how easy it is to ask for donations for this cause!
Show up and bowl! Celebrate with Seattle's/Boise's reproductive justice community on April 24. There will be costumes, raffles, prizes, puns and more.

It’s probably the most fun you’ll ever have raising money for abortions.

Are you in? Will you STRIKE down barriers to abortion access with me?

Yours,
[YOUR NAME]

TPP = Profit Over Planet
How Bad Trade Deals Undermine the Environmental Movement

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a proposed trade agreement that would set rules governing approximately 40% of the global economy, expediting the export of fossil fuels and giving transnational corporations new tools to attack environmental laws.

Join us at panel discussion by local climate justice and fair trade advocates to learn about the TPP's controversial Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) system, which TransCanada is currently using under an existing trade agreement to demand $15 billion in US taxpayer compensation after President Obama rejected its permit to build the KeystoneXL pipeline.

Legislative Session Wrap-Up

Although we don't have a supplemental budget, most of the legislating for 2016 is at an end. We'll have a complete status update of our legislative priorities.

Our speakers:
Rep. Luis Moscoso (1st District, North King County) was first elected to the legislature in 2010. He is Vice Chair of the Transportation Committee and sits on Public Safety and State Government. He is known for sponsoring the Washington State Voting Rights Act and being a leader in the people of color caucus in the legislature. He has a 100% voting rating from both Labor and the Washington Conservation Voters.

Darcy Burner lives in Carnation and is running in an open seat to replace Rep. Chad Magendanz in the 5th LD, where he is running for the Senate. Burner is well known, having run twice for the 8th Congressional District seat. She would be a strong progressive in a swing district, helping the Housing Democrats to hold their one-seat margin.

We promise a lively, informal discussion. The LAC is known as a unique opportunity to have a dialog in a friendly setting. Please come with questions for our speakers.

While the President has made the good decision to keep the Atlantic out of the plan, deeply vulnerable areas like the Gulf of Mexico, and America's arctic are still on the table.

Thankfully we can still fix this -- that's where you come in!

Join us this Wednesday at the University of Washington to hear from Arctic Activists, take action against Arctic offshore drilling plans, and more! RSVP today! http://sierra.force.com/events/details?data=b3017f55c5fd271a6af59d0d12629735bd809fc9eb14517e45affd929eeefc2d7fc04883b8

Event Details:

Who: Seattle Arctic leaders; Alex LenFerna, Student Activist; Fred Fellaman, Seattle Port Commissioner, and you!
What: From Seattle to the Arctic, Keep it in the Ground!: A reception, a talk, and opportunities for action
When: Wednesday, March 30, 2016 5:30 p.m.
Where: University of Washington, Husky Union Building Room 334, 4001 E Stevens Way NE, Seattle, WA 98195

Questions? Contact Isabelle Goodman at isabelle.goodman@sierraclub.org

For the people and the wildlife of the Arctic and for our planet, we need to do all that we can to keep Arctic oil in the ground. We must convince President Obama to fulfill his climate legacy and remove Arctic drilling from the five year plan in his last year. Otherwise, we, and the rest of the planet, could be left to deal with a melting world, in a hostile dirty-fuel driven political environment.

35. Seattle Housing Levy Public Hearing 4/4
Wed Mar 30, 2016, 10:32 PM
Mar 2016

Next week, the Seattle City Council's Select Committee on the Housing Levy will be holding a public hearing to solicit input on the shape of the upcoming Seattle Housing Levy.

This is a great opportunity for housing providers and their staff, board members, and residents, as well as all Seattle residents to come and share their stories about why affordable housing and the Seattle Housing Levy are important to them and their communities.

Yesterday, at our annual Celebration event, Mayor Murray said that passing Seattle Housing Levy is the single most important thing that we can do to impact housing affordability in our city.

HDC Members agreed on a set of Levy Principles for this levy, and we are happy to say that Mayor Murray's proposal is in alignment with those principals. We really encourage you to join us at this hearing, and to support Mayor Murray's proposal to replace and expand the expiring Housing Levy with a new levy of $290 million over 7 years that serve older adults, people with disabilities, families, individuals experiencing homelessness, and Seattle workers fighting to remain in their city.

We have put together an event page so that we can coordinate attendees - please use the link below to let us know if you'll be able to attend.

MON April 18, 7:30PM, Doors @ 6:30pm
Tamara Draut - Political Sway of ‘The New Working Class’
Downstairs at Town Hall $5. Seattle has set the standard for a $15/hour minimum wage model, but what about the rest of the country? According to author Tamara Draut (Sleeping Giant), America’s current working class is poised to transform the national economy and politics for the better. Called “thorough and lively” by author Barbara Ehrenreich (Nickel and Dimed), Draut’s examination of labor, unions, organizing, and action are critical for tackling today’s economic inequalities. She’ll outline the makeup of this new working class (more female, more racially-diverse, holding a broader range of professions) and why their “untapped political power” could be the key to real change in this tumultuous election year.

Join Alliance for Justice and the California Teachers Association for the Southern California premiere of the new First Monday film!

Powerful corporate interests have spent decades working to reshape the Supreme Court and bring cases that would reinforce and deepen inequality rather than remedy it. These special interests that brought Harris v. Quinn and Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association are not finished, and will continue to dismantle workers’ rights and protections. The fight over the Supreme Court nomination comes at a critical time in the history of the Court, the law, and our nation with far-reaching consequences for all Americans.

The Right to Unite highlights the importance of unions and the Court’s impact on workers’ rights through the stories of two home healthcare workers. Following the film will be a discussion featuring a distinguished panel of speakers regarding the current nomination fight and the future of the Supreme Court.

Refreshments will be provided

45. Coal export hearings around the state
Sat Apr 9, 2016, 02:43 AM
Apr 2016

Submit your comment on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) today. We must stop Millennium from polluting the Columbia River River with what could be the nation’s largest coal export terminal. The DEIS is an important tool for showing decision-makers that far and wide, people want a clean and healthy future – not coal.

We have three important public hearings to pack as we hit the road to end coal export.

Longview: Tuesday, May 24th at the Cowlitz Expo Center
1:00-9:00PM with a rally at 5:00PM
Spokane: Thursday, May 26th at the Spokane Convention Center

1:00-9:00PM with a rally att 5:00PM
Pasco: Thursday, June 2nd at the Trac Center
1:00-9:00PM with a rally at 5:00PM

Stay tuned for workshops on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement in your community plus transportation information for the public hearings and the rally time prior. Please wear red!

Here are two simple actions to make a difference today:

Submit your comment on the DEIS.

http://www.powerpastcoal.org/act/millennium-bulk-terminals/?org=800&lvl=100&ite=545&lea=478217&ctr=0&par=1&trk=&org=800&lvl=100&ite=545&lea=478217&ctr=0&par=1&trk=

Coal’s future is bleak – Millennium backer Arch Coal filed for bankruptcy in January and their dreams of mining in Montana’s Otter Creek are over. But Big Coal still wants to use the Columbia River as a dirty coal chute to Asia as their last hope to prop up an unhealthy industry. Fortunately, the movement to stop dirty coal from polluting our towns and rivers is bigger and stronger than ever. Now is our time to shine, and lock out dirty coal once and for all.

Are you a prospective candidate? Campaign staffer? Grassroots organizer?

Join us for Camp Wellstone Seattle!
April 22-24, 2016
Register here: http://www.wellstone.org/events/camp-wellstone-seattle-2016

Camp Wellstone is open to anyone interested in gaining practical skills in progressive political action. We train candidates, campaign workers, and organizers how to win progressive change. Camp Wellstone has been held in most states across the country and there are over 30,000 Camp Wellstone alumni in all 50 states!

During Camp Wellstone, we provide focus areas (tracks) based on your role in progressive organizing, each with a distinctive curriculum taught by some of the nation's leading experts in grassroots politics and organizing. We draw from Paul and Sheila Wellstone's innovative approach to politics - something we call the Wellstone Triangle. The three elements of the triangle are: progressive public policy, which lays out an agenda for action; grassroots community organizing, which builds a constituency to fight for change; and grassroots electoral politics, which provides tools for influencing policymakers and holding them accountable.

Camp Wellstone always takes place over the weekend. The schedule is:

Friday, 3pm – 9pm
Saturday, 9am – 6pm
Sunday 9am – 3:30pm

When you register, you choose from one of three tracks below and stay with that track throughout the weekend:

Grassroots Organizer Track (c3):

49. Ant-fuel terminal demonstrations at Anacortes
Wed Apr 27, 2016, 05:26 AM
Apr 2016

We have to Break Free from fossil fuels. Across the country, activists are coming together in May with a series of escalated actions, where some will be risking arrest in order to send the urgent message that we need to do more, faster, for a just transition to a clean energy future.3

On May 13, 14 and 15, there’s a big action in Anacortes, WA, where activists will converge at two refineries to push back against fossil fuel companies' attempts to turn the Northwest into a dirty energy superhighway.. Can you be there?

Learn more about the escalated action in Anacortes and RSVP to speak out against the expansion of dangerous fossil fuel infrastructure.

Break Free is being organized by local groups in partnership with our friends at 350 to escalate the resistance against fossil fuels and build even more pressure for action — because time and time again we’ve shown that when we fight, we win.

Across the country, activism is serving up victories against fossil fuel infrastructure expansion — like refineries, pipelines and oil train terminals — and pushing President Obama to make some progress to crack down on fossil fuels and global warming pollution.

But our leaders aren’t moving fast enough, not even to hit the pollution reduction targets they agreed to in the Paris Climate deal.

It’s up to us to keep pushing for more urgent action.

http://breakfreepnw.org/

Thousands of people are converging upon March Point in Anacortes, WA in mid-May 2016. This is a site with two refineries where hundreds of people will risk arrest by engaging in peaceful civil disobedience. We are asking YOU to join this historic convergence and begin the global break from fossil fuels. Please fill out the form below to let us know you plan to participate in Break Free.

53. The Exiled Palestinians: Fircrest 5/26
Tue May 17, 2016, 03:15 AM
May 2016

What: The Exiled Palestinians: Stateless Palestinians from the Camps in Lebanon: Two Palestinian Refugees
When: Thursday, May 26th at 7:30 pm
Where: Fircrest United Methodist Church, 6308 South 19th (just west of Pearl), Tacoma

On May 14, 1948, as Zionist leader David Ben Gurion was proclaiming a Jewish state in Palestine, his heavily armed troops seized the ancient Palestinian Arab town of al-Zeeb and drove out most of the inhabitants. Eighteen-year-old Mariam Fathallah was one of them. She and her young husband and their families were forced to flee to Lebanon, along with most of the town. By the end of the year, the 4,000 year old community had been leveled to the ground. More than half the Arab Palestinians in Palestine were killed or expelled and more than half of the cities, towns and villages of Palestine were made to disappear, a crime that Palestinians call al-Nakba (the Catastrophe).

Mariam, now 86 years old, wants to meet you and tell her story in person. So does Amena Ashkar, the granddaughter and great granddaughter of other Nakba survivors, who has known no other home than refugee camps. Come and hear their stories. Come and ask your questions.
Sponsored by Jewish Voice for Peace (Tacoma chapter) and The Rachel Corrie Foundation.

Jun 2016

Don't let Big Coal be the only voice on 6/21 in Seattle!

Winning feels good, doesn't it? Especially against Big Coal. It's an art we've been perfecting here in the Northwest. Thanks to thousands of activists like you, we've defeated five proposed coal export terminals and secured the retirement of two coal plants. If you speak up now, we can win again!

Subsidized coal is propping up an otherwise crumbling industry, fueling coal exports, and stunting the growth of clean and renewable energy.

Join us on June 21 to tell the federal government that it's time to transition out of the coal business!

WHO: You! And other clean energy future visionaries
WHAT: Seattle Federal Coal Lease Hearing
WHEN: Tuesday, June 21, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Doors open for speaker registration at 8 a.m., and there will be a rally before the hearing at 9 a.m. in Westlake Park, 401 Pine St. (a few short blocks away)

Jun 2016

Hard to Swallow: Racism, Accountability, and the Flint Water Crisis
Thursday, June 23, 7:00 - 9:00pm
Town Hall Seattle (1119 8th Ave, Seattle 98101)
RSVP and Purchase Tickets ($5)

Concern for civil rights led a journalist working for the ACLU to expose one of the nation’s largest public health crises.

Veteran investigative reporter Curt Guyette was hired by the ACLU of Michigan to document the impact of the state's radical emergency manager law. The measure undermines representative democracy by taking away the power of locally elected officials and allowing a state appointee to take complete control of school districts and cities.

Join us for a special Town Hall Seattle event with ACLU staff reporter Curt Guyette has exposed the shocking story of how government actions resulted in the poisoning of the water supply for residents of Flint, Michigan.

Curt will share how events unfolded, how racism and the suspension of a democratic process led to the crisis, and the efforts to hold government officials accountable for their misdeeds. In the course of reporting on the law, Guyette identified one of its most egregious outcomes: the story of how a toxic water system poisoned the people of Flint.

$5 tickets can be purchased here.

About Town Hall Seattle: Town Hall is accessible by most metro transit routes, onsite parking $7, with limited 2 hour street parking. There is a no host cafe/bar available in the lobby. If you have any questions about accessbility or would like to request accomodations, please contact events@aclu-wa.org by June 20.

Lack of choice in WA State races discouraging

http://www.eoionline.org/blog/lack-of-choice-in-state-races-discouraging/

We don’t have much influence on the presidential election, and our Congressional delegation is only a tiny percentage of the entire Congress, so we don’t have much leverage on public lawmaking at the federal level. But we can and do actually elect our state legislators. They are the people who make the decisions that affect us most directly on schools, roads, public health, safety and health at work, unemployment compensation, taxes and tax giveaways, and higher education, among other issues.

With that thought in mind, we should brace ourselves for highly visible and well argued elections throughout our state. But as is turns out, in two-fifths of all these elections, either the Republican party or the Democratic party has failed to field candidates. So, for example, if you want to vote for a Republican candidate in the 38th District, the heart of Everett, you are out of luck. You also can’t vote for a Republican in the 21st District for position No. 1 (Mukilteo, Edmonds, and Lynnwood). Likewise, if you want to vote for a Democratic candidate for Senate in the 39th District (Darrington, Arlington, Monroe, and Sedro Wooley), you can’t.

You could make an argument that in some of these districts voters could choose among Republican candidates and in other districts, among Democratic candidates, and in some districts they could vote for a Libertarian. So perhaps there is a little choice there. But in almost a quarter of the races, there is no race at all, because there is only one candidate. In the 38th District, position 1, you can vote for June Robinson, period. No other candidate is on the ballot. In the 39th District Senate race, you can vote for Kirk Pearson. And that’s your choice! In the 40th District (Mount Vernon, Anacortes, the San Juans, and part of Bellingham), you have no choice for the House positions. You can vote for Kristine Lytton for position one and Jeff Morris for position two. And that’s it.

The Democrats have essentially ceded Eastern Washington and the Republicans have ceded Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma, Edmonds and Everett.

It is no wonder that hundreds of thousands of citizens don’t bother to vote. On the issues closest to them, such as funding for education, they have no choice to make on their ballots. So why bother?

58. Testify against oil trains in Vancouver 6/27
Fri Jun 24, 2016, 11:02 PM
Jun 2016

This Monday in Vancouver, Washington’s Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council (EFSEC) will begin its adjudication process for the largest oil by rial terminal proposal in North America – the proposed Tesoro Savage terminal. Join doctors, neighborhood leaders, local businesses, and climate activists to welcome EFSEC to Vancouver and demonstrate our opposition to dangerous oil trains in our communities.

Join us at 8 AM on Monday to rally with signs, banners, and speakers outside before the hearing begins. Our presence will be a simple, very important way to focus EFSEC’s attention on the many reasons to deny a terminal that could bring in five oil trains daily just like the one that derailed and burned in Mosier.

RSVP to the Rally to Welcome EFSEC in Vancouver by emailing Dan Serres.

Monday, June 27. 8 AM rally. Hearing begins at 9 AM.
Clark College Conference Center (Please note: not on Clark College main campus)

18700 SE Mill Plain Blvd. Vancouver WA 98683

EFSEC’s month-long, trial-like hearing will begin and end in Vancouver, with different parties presenting detailed evidence about why the Council should approve or deny the project. Already, EFSEC has received thousands of pages of powerful arguments from cities, tribes, members of the public and even state agencies urging the Council to deny Tesoro’s dangerous oil terminal.

Read compelling excerpts from pre-hearing testimony and more information as this unfolds here, including a recommendation by Washington's Department of Natural Resources to deny the proposal.

The general public does not have the opportunity to give testimony on Monday, but our presence in red shirts will be evidence of the deep, broad opposition to the Tesoro Savage proposal in Vancouver.

The hearing room can hold roughly 100 members of the public - let's make sure it's packed!

See you on Monday! And don’t forget to RSVP to Dan.
