A question about Washington caucuses for my daughter

My daughter moved to Washington in September and has registered to vote. She told me that from what she can gather, ballots are mailed to registered voters and they can just be dropped off, but I thought you guys have a caucus where you have to show up? Please advise. She's in Blaine, north of Bellingham on the Canadian border.

All in all, a much better experience than back in 2008. Despite a miserable cold, I enjoyed myself. Capt.Rocky300 Mar 2016 #11

Primaries are a caucus event followed by a paper ballot in June I believe. That part is referred to as "The beauty contest." It is the caucus that truly matters as delegates are selected to go on and represent your precinct and eventually lead to delegates from the state to attend the convention.

Have her call the Whatcom County Clerk for information regarding registration and where to caucus on March 26.

I'll have her do that. She's never caucused before, so it's all new to her. She's kind of shy, so I'm not sure if I can talk her into getting involved to this degree, but I'm going to try.

The HRC supporters in '08 were pretty ugly towards us Obama supporters. I think it's going to be worse this time. It won't stop us though from standing up for Bernie.

Good luck to her.

P.S. I should add that the general will be paper ballot that will be mailed to her and she can either mail it back in or drop it off in a designated ballot box. Ours is at our public library and we don't even have to get out of the car. It should be this way everywhere in the country IMHO.

Our caucus went overwhelmingly for Obama. Anyone who even tried to speak on behalf of Hillary was booed and shouted down. I left in tears. I even had an Obama supporter apologize to me on the way out. I am dreading it even more this year. I may turn in an affidavit on religious grounds since it's Easter weekend and we had other plans to celebrate out of town that the caucuses would interrupt. I have been going to these caucuses since 1988 and I think it is time to change.

Obama supporters were condescending if not rude to us Hillary supporters. So I'm nervous about confrontations with Sanders supporters who are even more vitriolic on line than Obama supporters were.

The OPs daughter should go to the Washington Democratic web site and pre-register and print out a form.

I hate social interactions myself, but after caucusing in '08 --and taking my precinct for Gravel (!)-- I decided to become the PCO and PCC this time. As LisaM said below, she wouldn't have to speak, just write her choice.

I haven't talked to her in a few days, so I'll probably send her a reminder today.

I liked Mike Gravel, too. He was my senator when I first moved here, and when I took those "I side with" tests back in 2008, he was always the top choice. Unfortunately, by the time our caucus rolled around Hillary and Obama were the only two still in the race.

You don't have to speak at a caucus. You can just vote. I expect that Hillary supporters will need thick skins. The caucus hours overwhelmingly favor college students over other demographics and will likely be full of Sanders people. Regarding the later, all mail voting (which I hate) it's sometimes necessary to have extra postage (I think it should be franked if we are going to have this system but it's not). The dropoff locations in Seattle are a joke (one is in a park) and absolutely discourage participation, but maybe Blaine is better.

I'm in South Pierce County. Most caucuses in my county are meeting in schools. The building trades have been canvassing this area for Clinton as have several other union groups. In 2008 Obama won a very narrow victory at my caucus site. People were enthusiastic but unfailingly polite.
