Supreme Court sales tax ruling could be $450M-a-year windfall for Washington state

Washington state could reel in about $450 million in additional annual tax revenue after the Supreme Court ruled Thursday that online retailers must pay state sales tax.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office estimated in a November report that Washington could expect to collect between $298 and $453 million in extra sales tax revenue each year if the Supreme Court's decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair Inc. came out in favor of states.

"States that rely most heavily on sales taxes like Texas, Washington, Florida, Nevada, and Tennessee are the big winners here and could see real budget gains if they follow South Dakota's example," Fitch Ratings Director of U.S. Public Finance Stephen Walsh said in an email.

Olympia recently passed a law requiring remote sellers making $10,000 or more in retail sales to Washington customers to pay state sales tax.

Great! Spend the add'l income on schools and infrastructure, etc.

GAO said the states could haul in an addition $8-13 Billion of badly needed revenue, so good for them.

Texas could get as much as $1.2B, but since they hate any and all taxes, so they will opt not to collect it, amiright Texas....?
