The outstanding rent Keilani Luxmore owed on her Seattle apartment for the month of December wouldnt buy you a cup of coffee, a gallon of gasoline or even bus fare in this city.
But Luxmores failure to pay $2 last month means she is facing eviction from the home she shares with her three young children, in addition to the possible loss of the federal Section 8 voucher that covers most of her rent.
It could also result in a return to a homeless shelter for Luxmore and her children, ages 3 and under.
I cant take care of my three kids without my Section 8 voucher, said Luxmore, 23, as she wept, standing in a hallway of the King County Courthouse on Thursday, awaiting a hearing on the eviction proceeding. I just want my kids to be safe. Her two sons, ages 3 years and 18 months, played around her as she cried to her attorney in frustration. Her 7-month-old daughter cooed occasionally in her stroller.

(9,426 posts)Sorry to sound like Debbie Downer, but 23 with three kids and no husband? Unless she spent the money on birth control, I am not moved by her plight. I feel sorry for the young children, though. It sounds like a very high price to pay for only $2. Are we missing something here?

Luxmore bounced around homeless shelters for months in the process of escaping an abusive relationship.
There also doesn't seem to be anything else involved. According to the article the Judge seemed rather aggravated that they were there over such a small amount

That damned maternal instinct. Too bad for her she cant abandon them like the dads so often do.

(12,394 posts)Judge: "Do you owe the money? Answer a simple, 'yes or no,"
Tenant answers, Yes.
Judge: "Can you pay it now?"
At that point, the tenant pays the money and everyone goes home. If not, eviction notice is signed.
In N.J. there would be no threat of being on the street for $2.00
Reading further, there is an issue of improper "service" where the 3 days notice was left on the wrong door.
O.T.O.H., Section 8 tenants are usually desirable since the rent is guaranteed. There may be other issues with noise or cleanliness where Lux wants to get rid of her.
