Cowlitz County deputy killed in shooting; police arrest 'person of interest'

A Cowlitz County sheriff's deputy was shot and killed late Saturday night while responding to a call involving a disabled vehicle.

The deputy, who was not identified in the initial release from the Cowlitz County's sheriff's office, was shot around 10:15 p.m. after he was sent to investigate a disabled vehicle blocking Fallert Road near Kalama River Road.

Shortly after being brought to PeaceHealth Medical Center in Vancouver, Washington, the deputy died from his injuries.

Police have located a person of interest in the shooting, and are "following up on other leads related to the case," according to the sheriff's office most recent release.
