Man falls off paddleboard, drowns in Lake Washington

MERCER ISLAND, Wash. -- A man was found 17 feet below the surface of Lake Washington after he fell off a paddleboard and drowned Sunday afternoon.

About 5 p.m., officers responded to Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island.

Jeff Magnan with Mercer Island Police Department said officers quickly asked for backup, which included divers.

The search for the victim lasted for more than an hour before crews located his body.

Magnan said he was found without a life jacket on.

Probably a good idea to wear a life vest even if you are a good swimmer.

People simply do not just drown because they hit water unless there is a reason and nothing in the story. People swim in lakes all the time. The swimming isn't that productive or fun with a jacket on.

I don't know but you seem to be making a lot of assumptions.

I'm a formerly competitive triathlete and I still wear a life vest when boating. Better safe than sorry.

with very little information. Me making assumptions? I asked questions to get more information before suggesting everyone where a jacket when going into a lake. And ya, competitive swimmer for two decades, lifeguard and WSI instructor here.

yet say "The swimming isn't that productive or fun with a jacket on." He wasn't swimming. He was boating and that's basic boating safety.

stopped face down in a puddle of water and drowned. Horrible accident. It has stuck with me for decades. There is time to be wary of water and times when shit happens.

I don't know why one would risk it in any but the most shallow and calm of water sources.
