The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has exempted Gogebic Taconite from any requirement to apply for a detailed air pollution permit for bulk sampling at the proposed mine site in the Penokee Hills.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has confirmed that the Gogebic Taconite mining company won't need an air pollution permit to gather 4,000 tons of rock for testing.
In a letter released Tuesday, the DNR air management department granted the company's request for a permit exemption. A review of Gogebic Taconite's bulk sampling plan in December indicated an exemption probably would be granted based on company projections.
However, the Gogebic Taconite will need to monitor emissions, keep records of them, and take steps to control dust, said the letter, which was dated Monday.
