Milwaukee County April 1 referendum on slashing supervisors' pay

The state legislature's Republicans, in addition to meddling in our local government in so many other ways, decreed that we must vote in a referendum on whether to cut the County Board supervisors' pay by more than half, from about $50,000 to $24,000. I believe they would also lose their health insurance through the county. This is only for Milwaukee County. The legies already took away significant power from the Board and gave it to DINO Chris Abele, the county executive (who succeeded Scott Walker in more ways than just the title) and they made a large cut in the amount the Board can spend on its administration and staff. Scott Walker and the Republicans have wanted to pay the Board as a part-time job for a long time and now they have a chance to make it happen. Never mind that Milwaukee County is the largest by far in population (almost a million) and the most complex to govern.

This pay cut would fall hard on the progressive members of the board who are younger and/or raising families. I suspect they also put a lot more time and effort into their work than the older Republican members. Like voter suppression laws, it's another indirect way to shift the power toward those who are more affluent/conservative, based on an insignificant reason (it would save half a million dollars out of a $1.35 billion operating budget, or 0.04%).

Milwaukee county residents, please be sure to vote in the April 1 spring election, and vote no on this. Thank you.

The referendum was a part of a larger statute passed last year, and I do remember reading about it back then, but most people have probably forgotten by now. I know I did.

Thanks for voting! Pass the word too.
