On Tuesday, Wisconsin Republicans told a federal court that they would be willing, as the court suggested, to save the cost and time of a trial on their disputed legislative redistricting maps by going back and redrawing the maps. But they couldn't, they said, because an old state law prohibited that.

The federal three-judge panel considered that response and said, no, the state law doesn't prevent redrawing the maps to make them more nonpartisan while protecting voters. So, might the court presume the GOP-controlled legislature would now proceed to redraw the maps?

On Wednesday, the Republicans answered the judges: No. Let's go to trial.
So were Republican party officials lying on Tuesday about their willingness to redraw maps, or did they have a massive change of heart overnight?

Well, here's a clue: Even as the GOP was posturing in court about how it would really, really, really, really like to get this thing over with and fix those maps, Gov. Scott Walker was busy doubling to nearly a million dollars what the state is paying to a law firm to defend the Republican Party redistricting scheme.
