Van Hollen will still fight for voter ID before election
Oct 9, 2014 10:58 p.m.
MADISON (WKOW) - Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says he will explore alternatives to make sure the state's voter ID law is in place for the November election.
....The A.G. released this statement Thursday night:
"I believe the voter ID law is constitutional, and nothing in the Court's order suggests otherwise. Instead, the Court may have been concerned that even with the extraordinary efforts of the clerks, absentee ballots that were distributed before the 7th Circuit declared the law valid might not be counted........

(3,577 posts)What are their internal polls telling them? Contrast the reaction to the voter ID decision with Walker's comment that the fight against gay marriage is over in Wisconsin after the Court's refusal to hear their appeal. They don't really care about gay marriage except to energize their base (and fewer of them as time passes). But taking away the votes of thousands of Democrats in a close race--that's truly important!

(2,284 posts)I recently voted with an absentee ballot. There were instructions inside that were very confusing. They said an ID would be needed with the initial request for the ballot. If the voter thought the ballot was issued without this ID the voter should contact the City Clerk. So what the hell does that mean?

(3,577 posts)Those instructions were for the time before the Supreme Court's order banning ID for this election. In the future, if we are so unlucky as to have voter ID upheld on the merits by the U.S. Supreme Court, absentee voters would have to send a copy of their ID with the application for absentee ballot (at least with the first application). But people should remember that ID isn't required of absentee voters who apply and check "indefinitely confined" to home to get ballots for every election. The definition by the GAB: "Indefinitely confined voters are persons who, because of age, physical illness, infirmity or disability, are eligible to receive ballots automatically for all elections."

(2,284 posts)I'm not "indefinitely" confined, just temporarily. There is no reason it should be so confusing to vote except to satisfy the Republicants.

(3,577 posts)If you don't have a driver's license or state ID, start now on the process of getting an ID. The next elections are in February or April, so even with the problems of short hours and distance to the DMVs, the current procedure for getting the free ID will hopefully be do-able. If that isn't practical, just check the box for indefinite and vote absentee that way every time.
You are right that it shouldn't be this way, but If the Supreme Court doesn't come through, we'll have to do what's necessary. Or get a decent legislature and governor and repeal the ID law. Easier said than done, I know.
