It's one of those 'don't know whether to laugh or cry' examples of teh stupid. These 'letters to Robin' are glimpses into the minds of the legislators who will determine Wisconsin's fate over the course of this legislative session- and it's frightening. How can one make sense of appointing a two-year college dropout as the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities?
Assembly 'term papers' offer insight into GOP lawmakers' ideas
When sophomore Republican legislator David Murphy applied in November to lead the Assembly higher education committee, he pitched a fairly bold idea Eliminate or reform the University of Wisconsin Colleges and Extension.
Its an antiquated system that was originally designed for an agrarian economy, Murphy, R-Greenville, wrote about the University of Wisconsin Systems 13 two-year colleges and the continuing education program with offices in all 72 counties. Many of these functions are or can be done by the (Wisconsin Technical College System).
The pitch must have resonated. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, named Murphy who attended a UW two-year college in the 1970s, but didnt complete his degree the new chairman of the Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities.
Other ideas expressed in the letters to Robin include requiring high school graduates to be tested on the Federalist Papers, making DPI positions (including the Superintendent) part time stipend/per diem positions, capping food stamp benefits after two years, and on and on...
