STELLAREPORT KEEPING AN EYE ON THE RIGHT...AND THE WRONG (update)

http://stellareport.blogspot.com/

BREAKING....

ACCORDING TO SOURCES WHO KNOW, GTAC WILL NOT BE MAKING ITS LEASE PAYMENT DUE IRON COUNTY TODAY. MORE TO COME LATER.

THIS COMES AFTER WPR REPORTS GTAC PRESIDENT BILL WILLIAMS IS CLAIMING THEY ARE HOLDING OFF ON MOVING FORWARD BECAUSE OF FEARS THE EPA MIGHT HAVE THEM ON THEIR RADAR. WILLIAMS ALSO IMPLICATED IRON COUNTY'S ORDINANCE AS A DETERRING FACTOR.

STELLAREPORT HAS ALSO LEARNED THAT THE COUNTY'S SPECIAL COUNSEL ON MINING-RELATED MATTERS HAS BILLED THE COUNTY OVER $129,000 TO DATE. AMONG ITEMS BILLED FOR, RESEARCH AND ADVICE ON "PROTESTS" APPEARS IN NO FEWER THAN 5 SEPARATE INVOICES. THIS IS CRANDON/TOWN OF NASHVILLE ALL OVER AGAIN.

Mining Company Puts Penokee Hills Work On Hold
Company Head Points To Uncertainty With Regulatory Issues

The president of mining company Gogebic Taconite said it’s unlikely they’ll resume work at the proposed mine site in the Penokee Hills this winter.

GTAC President Bill Williams said they had plans for more monitoring wells, but that’s been delayed. He said they’re stalling work because the company wants assurance a mine is possible in the Penokees.

“We’ve seen the EPA step out against the Pebble Mine up in Alaska. Are we on their radar? Don’t know,” Williams said.

The Environmental Protection Agency used a section of the Clean Water Act last February to suspend mining activity by the Pebble Mining Company because it endangered the pristine Bristol Bay in Alaska.

Williams said that case, as well as a draft Iron County zoning ordinance, may prevent his company from mining at the northern Wisconsin site. Tribal leaders asked the EPA to intervene last fall.

This may be a case where the former are getting a clue and the latter are making enough noise to cause Cline and Walker some problems.

GTAC HOLDING UP THE SHOW IN IRON COUNTY

.....And now we learn GTAC has not even installed monitoring equipment in its deep groundwater monitoring wells yet. So the testing hasn't even begun. (Since there is no equipment and no work being done, it begs the question: Why are the Penokees still closed off to recreationalists?) The DNR confirmed for me this week that the deep groundwater wells still haven't been fitted with piezometers necessary to monitor water conditions. And if the shallow wells have been monitored for water levels, none of the info has been passed on to the DNR as of yet. (Word has it, however, that some of the core sample holes are flowing over, and should be capped.)

And now GTAC president Bill Williams says there will be no new drilling this winter because the snow hasn't been removed from the area. What? Probably shouldn't have fired the snowplowing contractors.
