The retired judges who lead Wisconsin's elections board have worked closely to oversee its investigations, the agency's chairman said.

And retired Judge Gerald Nichol, chairman of the state Government Accountability Board, added that a top Republican's criticism that the board is beholden to the director and his staff "is just not true."

In a letter released Monday, Nichol offered one of the most outspoken defenses yet of the seven-year-old nonpartisan board, which oversees elections, campaign finance, lobbying and ethics. The board has been heavily criticized by Republicans who control the Legislature in recent years, especially over a secret John Doe investigation into coordination between Republican Gov. Scott Walker's campaign and conservative groups.

"The members of the Government Accountability Board collectively have more than 120 years of experience as nonpartisan Circuit Court judges, so we do not undertake investigations lightly, and do not participate in fishing expeditions or partisan witch hunts," Nichol wrote in a Jan. 22 letter to Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester. "When the Board is presented with credible, hard evidence the law has been violated, and when the Board finds a reasonable suspicion, an investigation is a proper use of public resources."

Nichol's letter came in response to recent comments Vos made in an interview with WMTV.

"We know that they were involved in the John Doe investigations with (district attorneys) in Milwaukee, we know they hired investigators to go and do that work without the authority of that GAB board of judges," Vos told the station.....more....

... critical of Kennedy in the past (Diebold advocated, outsourcing part of our elections to Accenture - nee Arthur Andersen) but the GAB board of judges seems to be fair-minded and strong advocates for the People.

Vos and his Rethug friends just can't stand the scrutiny.

GAB chairman tells Vos board closely oversaw John Doe investigation

.....“Your criticism that the Board is beholden to the Director and his staff is just not true.”

Nichol has been on the board since it was created in 2008. He was initially appointed by Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle and re-appointed by Republican Gov. Scott Walker. The chairman of the board is randomly chosen each year, and Nichol was selected this month as the 2015 chairman.

The board has been closely involved in a John Doe investigation looking into whether Walker's campaign and conservative groups supporting him illegally worked together in recall elections in 2011 and 2012. The investigation has been effectively stalled by a judge's order for more than a year and the accountability board ended its participation in the probe in August.

Vos was unavailable Monday morning but is expected to issue a statement later...

You cross Vos, you're gonna pay. Cancel classes at the UW because the President is on campus? When you submit your next budget he "will remember this" and you're gonna pay.. Criticize Robin's business practices? You pay. Investigate and/or embarrass Vos' friends? You pay. Embrace the President as he arrives in Milwaukee and advocate for state funding for a sports arena in Milwaukee? You will PAY, FUCKERS!!!
