Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker leaves after a meeting with Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne at No 11 Downing Street on Wednesday.
Associated Press

In a speech short on policy and heavy on restraint, Gov. Scott Walker addressed Great Britain's most prominent think tank Wednesday, avoiding difficult foreign affairs questions while emphasizing the "special relationship" between the world's largest Anglophone countries.

The Republican governor sought in his speech to bolster his scant foreign policy credentials ahead of his likely presidential run even as he largely declined to tackle the toughest questions on international affairs and a variety of other subjects. In his last response, Walker declined to answer a question and follow-up from his interviewer about whether evolution was real, saying politicians were better off steering clear of that issue.

"I'm going to punt on that one as well," Walker said. "I'm here to talk about trade, not to pontificate about other things."

After Walker declined to state his views on evolution, the event's moderator, Justin Webb of BBC Radio 4, told him that he believed any British politician would answer such a question by making clear that he or she believed evolution was true. Walker's campaign spokeswoman had no immediate comment.

On international affairs questions, Walker largely answered by saying he subscribed to the "old-fashioned" approach of not criticizing the U.S. president or the host country while outside the United States.

"I just don't think you talk about foreign policy while you're on foreign soil," Walker said, adding later, "I don't think it's wise to undermine your own president" in such situations...........................

by dodging the evolution question. I think he believes in it, but has to dodge it for his greater Waukesha base and the religious fundamentalists in the GOP Primary voter base.

"Walker in London declines to talk about world affairs, evolution
Appearing before this group - - Chatham House - - and not openly, and easily discussing world affairs would be like flying 3,500 miles to address the World Dairy Expo in Madison and ducking questions about farm prices, milk or cheese.

Or opening Summerfest and wondering what's with all the music."

Why did Walker's handlers think it would be a good idea to have Walker refuse to talk about international affairs when he agreed to give a speech and take questions at Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs?

I really hope this emboldens the US press to start asking real questions and real follow up questions.

Here's a link to video of the complete event. It's painful to watch, yet somehow satisfying.
