Why are people leaving Wisconsin? State ranked in top 10 for out-migration

.....No matter the reason, Wisconsin is among the top 10 states for people moving out, according to the annual survey from United Van Lines. Forbes reported the story recently and it has been widely circulated although probably not by many chambers of commerce.
The moving company United Van Lines has been doing the survey for 36 years and analyzed some 125,000 residential moves in the continental U.S. last year. While not scientific, it does provide a nice snapshot of migration patterns, along with fodder for social media chatter.
I think people see Wisconsin as a dead end, says George Dreckmann, longtime city of Madison recycling coordinator. The paper industry is near death, the auto industry is gone. Our flagship university is closed to most of the state's kids. The government under both Walker and (former Gov. Jim) Doyle showed no initiative or imagination. If I wasn't 62, I'd be leaving, too.

Linda Wyeth, a freelance writer from Wausau, moved to Wisconsin from Illinois in 1981 and is unhappy with the Republican takeover of the state.
My husband and I are considering moving to Vermont, home of Bernie Sanders, she says. We cannot stand the political environment here under the rule of Scott Walker and tea party Republicans, who are in charge in our county. We have worked our heart and soul out to get decent people elected, to no avail. While the rest of the state was cheering in November, we were crying. Here we are stuck with Terry Moulton, Scott Suder and Sean Duffy. How awful can it get? The ONLY thing keeping us here right now is our grandchildren.

(14,177 posts)It might not happen as fast, it's hard to say. But, it will happen if Republicans aren't booted out. Michigan had one industry it went bust, there was no investment in other industries at least not much of an investment. Infrastructure seems to have been an after thought. Yes, they blamed poor people for the decline in the economy, benefits were cut and they doubled their efforts at fighting "fraud." We can see how that turned out.

(25,249 posts)No house or cottage on the property. Just a ten by ten shack that houses an electrical hook-up and well. The taxes on the property have been going up precipitously in the last few years and I refuse to help fund Walker. At one time I was thinking of retiring on this property - but now I just want to sell.

As an aside--why are property taxes going up ?? Thought that issue was being addressed by Walker. I know I read how p. taxes continue to go down and that is why folks vote for Walker.

(25,249 posts)I just know as a non-resident with virtually raw property - my taxes have been going up quite a bit and this last year was really a big hit.

(53,475 posts)... folks are leaving our state too, renting U-Hauls and borrowing trucks from friends. After all, it's the low-income people who have suffered the worst under the Walker administration.
Of course many of Walker's backers would cheer the idea that lower-income folks are leaving our state.
While it's tempting to bail, I'm going to stay here and fight, but I really, really understand what Linda Wyeth is saying.

(27,461 posts)that's a big change, it makes it a different kind of state. When I lived there, I had moved there from Chicago. If the Tea Party had been in charge at that time, forget about it.

(635 posts)This is interesting. My husband is originally from Wisconsin, and after 11 years in Georgia, we are retiring back to the Midwest, to SW Wisconsin. He did extensive research so we could live in a "blue" county. The main reason is we have an adult son who is developmentally disabled, and many counties in WI have a good program with services for him and short waiting lists. We looked at all the other Midwest states, and WI had the best programs for our son. Hopefully Walker won't get a chance to cut them before we get there, and we'll only have to endure 2 years or so of him assuming he doesn't run again.

(411 posts)you can see its affect on many schools losing 90 or more pupils a year. Schools are struggling with shrinking budgets because of this.

(3,974 posts)He's making living here less appealing every day. And next year should see even more people leaving because of the UW cuts and the effects of his soon to be announced plans for state employee health insurance.

(3,974 posts)And it took 177 years for some dumb ass to come along and try and tear it down for his own self serving purposes. What the hell is wrong with him? And what the hell is wrong with every one of the Republicans in the legislature that they don't stand up to him and do what's right for Wisconsin?
