Spot a dead deer on the side of the road? Gov. Scott Walker doesn't want the state Department of Natural Resources paying to clean it up.
Walker's budget would delete $700,000 in funding a year for DNR to pay for disposal of deer carcasses along Wisconsin's roadways.
Instead, responsibility for paying to cart off the dead deer would fall to whatever other government agency is in charge of the road. Or they may be left uncollected.
"Dead and decaying deer on the roadside are unsightly and can dampen Wisconsin's reputation as a tourist destination," the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau cautioned members of the Legislature's budget committee in a memo describing the proposal.

(6,409 posts)We used to live right next to a deer disposal burial pit in central Wisconsin. The guy who collected the road kill deer didn't always do a good job of burying them and our dog would collect various deer parts from the burial pit. It was OK in the winter, when everything was frozen, but not so pleasant in the summer. If people are bothered by dead deer lying around, I'm sure Governor Walker will be happy to collect them at his house and dispose of them.

(3,741 posts).... however, leaving the carcasses for the other animals like the eagles, foxes, wolves or coyotes is a good thing. I had a dear killed at the end of my (very long) driveway and we got a tag for it from the MI State Troopers. It was a doe and out of season but we were allowed to use the meat (the bloody meat we cooked and gave to our dogs) and the rest we used or gave away to the needy. Maybe this Wiscon. law, could have an upside? I think that deer killed in hot weather should be removed from the roadside and put into the woods, away from traffic. The other animals will eat it. Where I see a problem is in areas that are not so rural.
