Mother Jones/Andy Kroll article on Democratic recall campaign strategy

I agree with the strategy of highlighting the lies and damage done to nearly every person and part of Wisconsin by the Walker administration. Everyone is set on how they feel about public employee rights and collective bargaining- so put it in the background as a campaign issue. If the Republicans don't have public employees as a target, what are they going to do? Make the people of Wisconsin hate themselves?

In an interview, an official with the Democratic Party of Wisconsin downplayed the importance of the anti-union provisions in Walker's "budget repair" bill in the Democrats' broader recall strategy. "Collective bargaining is not moving people," says Graeme Zielinski, a Democratic Party spokesman. And in the party's new strategy memo (PDF) for defeating Walker, there's little mention of collective bargaining or organized labor in the Democrats' messaging plans. . . .

The most potent anti-Walker messages, the Dems' strategy memo explains, slam Walker for pushing policies harmful to the middle class, slashing education funding, and grabbing power via a secretive redistricting process. What's more, Zielinski continues, Democrats' anti-Walker strategy will center on two key issues: the secret "John Doe" investigation targeting Walker aides and what Democrats calls Walker's "war on women."

... locate its ass with both hands. So far, no luck.

If we lose the recall (gasp! NO!) it will be due to the incredible ineptitude of our local Party.

The more clearly we can show that Walker hurts ALL of Wisconsin, the better the odds of recall success.

At this point, I think the less candidates invoke "Dane County", the better. I think it's safe to say that any Democrat has the West Side of Madison locked up.

How do we help voters in the rest of the state see that voting for Walker is a vote against themselves, not just a vote against state employees and schools? I know Falk is trying to do that, but it just doesn't come across very well, imho. I'm glad Barrett joined in, but my candidate is La Follete. I think he has the broadest message and statewide appeal- if he can just get the exposure and support.

We need to change the narrative to a broader economic theme. "John Doe" and "War on Women" are parts of the campaign but should not be the main theme, it doesn't hurt to line Walker with them, especially tying Walker to the national movement in "War on Women". "John Doe" doesn't carry a lot of weight yet with me, but that doesn't mean developments cannot happen in the case that would make this a major issue in the upcoming election.

What we need to do is attack Walker on "Raising Taxes" on Wisconsinites. Walker took away the earned income tax credit and homestead credit away from thousands families and seniors in the state, now they have to pay more in taxes.

We also need to talk about the poor economy in the state and the thousands of people who have lost jobs because of the Walker administration. We need to talk about how its harder for families today even with pay checks coming in to make ends me under Walker. To win this election we need to slam Walker with the same ads as the Republicans want to slam against Obama on the economy.

(instead of narrow focus on restoring CB) and we would have a winner.
Don't forget - other workers have suffered under Walker too - local living wage ordinances and other local protections like mandatory sick leave have been eliminated, erosion of child labor laws, Badgercare cuts directly impact the working poor who dont get ANY health insurance AT ALL.

Im a state worker-union thug -sure I want my CB back but at this point - maintaining/ coalescing the coalition is more important. We dont do that by demanding that MY issue is more important than YOURS, and Im going to hold up progress on everything else until I get it.

PS havent heard a satisfactory response to Vinehout, Cullen, and others who have pointed out that if the votes just arent there in the Assembly (which Repubs still hold) then how could holding the budget hostage work.... There may in fact be a satisfactory response but I just haven't heard it.
