Wisconsin tourism hit hard by pandemic

One after another, announcements of major event cancellations have rocked Wisconsin’s tourism industry and local economies over the past two months.

From the EAA AirVenture Convention in Oshkosh and Big Top Chautauqua in Bayfield to the Tommy Bartlett Show in Wisconsin Dells and Chippewa Valley Air Show in Eau Claire, the hits from the COVID-19 pandemic just keep coming.

The other pillars of the tourism industry — restaurants, hotels, resorts and retailers — are struggling as well under Wisconsin’s safer-at-home order intended to slow the spread of the new coronavirus.

“Every cancellation and every email about a business struggling is heartbreaking,” said Sara Meaney, state tourism secretary designee. “It’s devastating.”

Skipping just one year of typical Wisconsin tourism... and be amazed at what will happen.

The water will get cleaner. The air will have less pollution which the animals and birds and insects will appreciate.

Trees and plants will become stronger and forests healthier. Every bankrupt farm's soils do take a breath of fresher air and cleaner rainwater and restore some natural nutrients and natural pesticides by itself. Idle land will improve itself, earth does not go sour.

The migration of rare birds could see a population boom, in those species at risk or those in grave danger. Like cranes & egrets who love maternity in WIsconsin.

Hunters: spend the time normally shooting & drinking by helping the deer population beat it's own pandemic- CWD.

Fishermen. Start grabbing plastics from your favorite lakes & streams. FIsh for asian carp and other invasive species only. and kill them, Grind them into plant food?

Boaters: Gets some nets and gather plastics floating just under the surface as you drag a skier or two. Make your boat faster by going electric like cars do.

Days at the Beach: Help clean the shorelines, help fish hatcheries to bring yellow perch back to health and the 8-12" size they should be.

Create a tourism based on restoration, it will pay off year after year after year during pandemics and because it reinvests more than tourist dollars would.

If you know a bankrupt farm, help them get the soil in better shape so they can con back as eco-tourist destination. "Farm to table" restaurants on actual farms.

Pandemics are bad for human health, but we've created a pandemic in the ecosystems we demand perform for our normally destructive tourism.
