You'd think computers never make mistakes, nor can they be compromised. This has been a concern at least since what? the 2000 elections? Yet there's still no requirement to manually check ballots, and in some instances there's no paper trail to even check if someone wanted to.

I'm not just talking about the SC recount last year (though it came out far more accurately than I had predicted) but in every local recount I've ever observed in.

If every time we have an election the electoral sky is falling, who will believe us when the fraudulent shit really hits the fan?

After every November general election the GAB selects 50 reporting units and each of those municipalities must do a hand recount (procedure similar to the Supreme Court recount). These units are selected by random draw and the GAB selects which offices on the ballot are to be recounted. Members of the public may be present. The GAB also selects different units up to 1% of the total in the state for an audit that it conducts.

County boards of canvassers may also conduct their own audits or hand recounts if they see fit.

AFAIK it's in a proprietary data format, possibly encrypted, and in battery backed RAM. In order to audit the RAM
from the scanner you would have to pay manufacturer to generate readable dump of the votes. This is unacceptable.

I'm not a computer person but I have come to believe without access to the source code we are all nothing more than 80 year old Ramona's from Waukesha.. We have no idea how these computers are actually communicating...
