On Monday we will be celebrating the 500th Sing Along. That will be 500 consecutive weekdays that citizens have gathered at noon at our Capitol to exercise our First Amendment rights. Normally we sing in the Rotunda, but we move out to the State Street corner if there is a conflicting event. Typically we have anywhere between 40 and 100 people singing, though on special days, the number can be significantly higher.
Walker continues to use Palace Guard Chief Erwin to try to crush free speech in the Capitol. There have been more than 80 citations issued to singers since Erwin's crackdown began in September. Until last week, one had to hold a sign or lead some songs in order to be issued a ticket. But a recent development is the issuance of citations merely for attending the Solidarity Sing Along in the Capitol Rotunda. As my name on FB declares, the First Amendment is my permit. I don't need permission from Walker's henchmen in order to petition my government through song.
Well, we don't know what is going to happen on Monday. We don't know if the Capitol will be closed for "security" reasons, or if security will be gone by the noon-hour. What we do know is that we will find each other, and for an hour we will sing songs of freedom, labor and love.
If you are coming to Madison to see the President please join us afterwards at the Solidarity Sing Along. Help us stand up to the bullies. Take this opportunity to tell Walker that he cannot rewrite the traditions of our State, and that the Constitution is not trumped by his arrogance.

(34,658 posts)and I don't think the stage will be at the Capitol - I think its at the County Building on MLK Drive...

(6,622 posts)I don't believe for a moment that he'd actually come in. And yes, the stage is in front of the CC Bldg, just down the block from the Capitol. The public entrance to the secured area is on State, though, so it includes at least part of the square.
...but, a girl can dream...

(6,622 posts)on which many of us have tears in our eyes while we sing. Whether it's pride, sorrow, anger, hope, love for our new "family," or a combination thereof, sometimes it takes me two or three songs to get it together enough to do more then just lip synch.

(2,284 posts)I went to the Capitol the last time the President was in Madison. There were only a few singers there and only one of the Capitol cops. Do you think the CCs have to provide security for the President? I hope not as I don't think they have the President's best interest at heart.

(6,622 posts)instead of at the other end of State Street. I'm thinking Erwin will try to keep things pretty tight. Walk in there with a helium balloon, and you'll find out just how many Capitol Cops are around!
The Capitol Cops are charged with security of all of the State buildings, so they may be scattered around to help to secure other buildings within the zone, as well.
