Voting machine malfunction hits Pewaukee

http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/news/177514631.html

Officials in the Village of Pewaukee may have to recount ballots at the end of the day because of a machine malfunction.

A voter told the Journal Sentinel that when he voted Tuesday morning, the machine count didn't advance after he inserted his ballot.

"I went in to vote like normal. I waited in line and filled out a ballot. I went up to the machine to slide the ballot in," said Paul Provinzano. "I saw the number was 298. In the middle of the sound, it still said '298.' I thought, 'There's something wrong here.' "

He said poll workers weren't sure what to do. Provinzano said he alerted Village Clerk Nancy Zastrow, who assured him that although the machine counter didn't advance, his vote would still be recorded. She told him that the same thing happened to another voter 10 minutes later and that the machine was now off by a count of two.

Provinzano said the clerk told him if the machine tally is off by the end of the day, she would alert the county clerk, who could decide that there should be a recount. A candidate could also request a recount, she told him, but the ballots might not otherwise be re-counted, the clerk allegedly said.

"I did call the state Government Accountability Board," Provinzano said. "He said he'd look into it. He also said they weren't following procedure as far as what happens when the counter is off."
