The bill is in, and it wasnt cheap.
Milwaukee prosecutors earlier this month closed their long-running John Doe investigation of Gov. Scott Walker's current and former aides.
In response, Walker shut down his legal defense fund on Friday after making final payments to the lawyers who assisted him during the nearly three-year investigation.
Walkers total legal tab due to John Doe probe: $650,000
With the conclusion of the legal process and no further cooperation with the Milwaukee County district attorneys office requested, the closure of the Scott Walker Legal Trust was completed today, said Nicole Tieman, spokesman for the Walker campaign.
The first-term Republican governor opened his legal defense fund just over a year ago, shortly after prosecutors brought charges against several of his former aides from his time as Milwaukee County executive.
Walker eventually sat a for a lengthy and contentious interview with Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm and his staff in the late spring. The governor has said repeatedly that he was never a target in the probe.
Records show his defense fund dispensed $432,754 to the Chicago and Milwaukee firms for which his two criminal defense lawyers worked. A boutique Madison law firm and APCO Worldwide, a Chicago-based PR firm, received another $15,000 from Walkers defense account.
In addition, Walkers campaign paid about $200,000 directly to Michael Best & Friedrich for so-called compliance issues related to the investigation. The campaign retained former U.S. Attorney Steve Biskupic, a former Michael Best lawyer who has since left the firm, when prosecutors subpoenaed campaign records the day before the 2010 general election.
