Thank you for replying. Little Ted Cruz was all of four when his parents left Calgary and moved back to the USA.

He grew up to become a right-wing Republican tea-bagger. Clearly the atmosphere of Canadian cultural and political values weren't strong enough to take hold of the little tyke. He's now one of those very special right-wing reactionaries whose ascent up the social and economic ladder was made with at least some government assistance, but who wants to make sure that that ladder won't be there for future generations of Americans.

...Canada was at its' most progressive. Alberta(Calgary) was struggling to keep up with the 'liberal' agenda of Pierre Trudeau. Its provincial governments were notoriously to the right of everybody else. The oil and petro-chemical industries showered the population with jobs and free market propaganda so it almost sounds like Teddies' parents 'jumped ship', for whatever reason.

To your point though, there is no doubt young Teddie benefited from socialized medicine. From pre-natal support to free childbirth and to all of the government sponsored health and vaccination programs.

Just the same, moving from Calgary to Texas sounds suspicious. Were his parents free-loaders???

But I'm only speaking from the point of view of a male born in 1971 in Ontario. Basically, my parents didn't have to pay for anything and the hospital care was excellent, and I saw a pediatrician at no charge from day one. I was also fortunate in that my dad had a very common unionized auto-worker job that covered prescriptions at the cost of pennies (those days are gone). In the 70's (in some ways) things were a bit better, in that the hospital gave new mothers tons of freebies like diapers, formula etc to take home with them, and I think my mom spent about 4-5 days in the hospital (for no real reason) after I was born.

Since the neo-liberals took over in the late 80's, 90's and aughts though, there has been more of a shift towards 'user-fees', and downloading costs to municipalities to free up hospital beds asap (probably (in part) to account for a boom in age-related baby boomer illnesses, but also because TEA conservatives exist here too). I'd assume that Ted Cruz basically had the same level of thorough and excellent care. Hope that helps.
