Question to all 42 of us in this group...

Are there any Canadian Forums worth reading/posting to, that amount to more than the verrrry occasional rant, that amount to more than a hill of beans? Are we so complacent and Apathetic?, Is the news cycle soooo stifled? (I think so) I post comments to the CBC occasionally (under Guy Ladouche), but it kills me that there are so many that post: 'Canada is great....nothing to see here..move along....dirty OWS's', Its sickens me. I know we are 1/10 the population of the states, but for Christ sake can't we have a forum to Commend or Destroy like DU??????

Radio One, anyway. It's on Sirius. Wonderful radio shows, reminds me of radio back in the 60s. The Vinyl Cafe, Wire Tap, Tapestry, Quirks and Quarks, Afghanada, The list goes on.

Never seen CBC TV, so maybe that's what you were referring to? Long live Radio One!

JMHO.

...worth listening to back in the days of Frum, Gzowski, Enright, et al. I spent the 70's tuned into them exclusively, including our local affiliates. Even the 80's, when I was spending 3 weeks out of a month forced to listen to U.S. stations, it was like being born again to finally be able to tune in, the CBC and Morningside.

Our local morning show was what finally provoked me into switching channels. The 'mothercorp' chose to designate an outsider to host OUR local morning show. They picked an eastern woman who arrived with all her eastern baggage and western misconceptions, took charge of the local neo-cons and pretty much made it impossible to listen to that show.

Before their latest 'renovation' a couple of years back, they had a great show, in the early morning, of light classical music hosted by a really bright, old school radio guy called Tom Allen. Two or three times a week he would bring on another bright and funny guy named Joe Cummings to discuss entertainment news. They were hilarious. Made me laugh out loud. Of course, like all the good stuff, they were unknown to CBC mgmt and were soon gone.

Now-a-days, if by chance I'm listening, it sounds more like a house party where everybody that brought a guitar can get up and sing their latest composition. I'm all for Canadian music and musicians but I'm used to Gord Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, the Guess Who, Murray McClaughlin, KD Laing....

Without the CBC carrying these new "artists", most of their work would never see the light of day.
I'll admit that it may be a generational thing. My standards are higher.

I've never seen anything equivalent to a "DU" for Canada.

I've seen a few left-leaning forums with little to no posting action. There are a couple forums with plenty of action, but they're "non-partisan", so they degenerate into pissing battles on any topic of substance. One that comes to mind in the latter category is http://www.mapleleafweb.com/forums/ . It's worth a look.

The righties have a cesspool called freedominion dot ca.

I've come across maplefeafweb before, and you're description is pretty accurate. There is not much content there, and what is, could just as easily be covered by reading the CBC site, and reading their comments. Very sparse and bland content, and bland commentators. I think DU's (including the old DU) lay-out is way more accessible, and inviting too.

Sad that despite so many progressive type people you know, and meet everyday, that there is an on-line wall of blandness, or just a vacuum. Apparently, if you build it, there is no guarantee that they will come. Will keep searching though.

There was a MapleLeaf.something at one time but I believe it's shut down. Yes, I do believe many Canadians are complacent and apathetic. I see two of my brothers from Alberta a few times a year, and am amazed at how well they think Canada under Harper's leadership is doing .. they're perfectly happy with how things are going. It's like they're living in some kind of bubble, and the world outside Alberta doesn't exist.

ya mapleleafweb is nothing worth looking at.

I've had a few friends who transplanted to Alberta for oil patch jobs, (and despite awesome hunting in their down time), they thought it was frozen hell on earth. Many of 'em tried to drag me out there with them, but I didn't go. Back in 2007-8 when oil prices briefly crashed, and work there was shut down because oil has to be $100/barrel to justify work, they all came home. 'Alberta living in a bubble' is a good analogy. Steven Harper has something like 92% popularity out there, despite how the rest of Canadians feel about him. But I guess when you have pocket money, you think the rest of Canada is just a bunch of crybabies.
