Dalton McGuinty set to resign from his Ottawa seat
Former Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty will resign his seat in the legislature, as pressure mounts over the deletion of e-mails that may have shed light on the costly cancellation of two gas-fired power plants.
Mr. McGuinty is expected to make the announcement Wednesday, a source told The Globe and Mail. A nomination meeting for his Ottawa-South constituency will be held June 20.
The former premier was absent from the legislature Tuesday, when the minority Liberals budget bill passed its final vote. Mr. McGuinty has skipped most legislative sessions since stepping down as premier earlier this year, but did turn up for two previous confidence votes, on the Throne Speech and the first vote on the budget.
For the last week, he has been dogged by questions about staff in his office who deleted e-mails. The problem was flagged by information and privacy commissioner Ann Cavoukian, who had been asked to look into it by a legislative committee probing the gas plant cancellations.
