A Canadian is prevented from entering the U.S after border officials gain access to her confidential medical history.
Meanwhile, in Ottawa, the Commons is in an uproar over revelations that U.S. spies set up shop here in 2010 with Canadian government assistance to snoop on international leaders attending the G20 meeting in Toronto.
Whats common to these two stories is the practice of information sharing between Canada and the U.S.
It has long existed in some form. It accelerated wildly after the 2001 terror attacks on New York and Washington. It now threatens to veer out of control.

(5,562 posts)So much government work is being subcontracted out to foreign private corporations. Accenture is one they use a lot here in BC, and it has ties to Halliburton. There were concerns about people's private information getting into the hands of homeland security, and it looks to me like the concern was valid.

And even worse is that the Canadian government thinks nothing about handing over every bit of its citizens details to the US.
In addition, a few months ago I read that not only were criminal records were being handed over to employers for background checks, but also police files that contained 'notes' regarding all interactions of the candidate with the police, even if no crime or conviction occurred. Perhaps medical records too; who knows anymore.

(4,253 posts)Especially in light of FATCA invading Canada snd the rest of the world.
See isaacbrocksociety.ca and face book No to FATCA.
More people renouncing their US citizenship, in record numbers. Many now boycotting the USA, products, investments and traveling there.
BOYCOTT THE USA iii
The world is finally seeing the bully that is threatening all countries. No one like bullies.
The next election will find Harper not reelected. He is destroying the Canada I love.

When he said, 'You won't recognize Canada when I get through with it,' he wasn't kidding."
Also, check out some of his other noteworthy quotes under 'the Ads'. I still have no idea how this man, who seems to at times despise Canadians, and his CONServatives were ever elected into office.

I won't be crossing the border anytime soon, as much as I've enjoyed shopping trips in Minot in the past with friends and relatives. It's just not worth it anymore and I stand with this woman in solidarity.
Can't wait to this group of cons and their traitorous policies as a thing of the past.
Thanks for all your information on FATCA, riverbendviewgal. I knew very little of it and appreciate all your information - just another way of eroding our rights here, and it's scary and disturbing.

And I used to go over all of the time, I'm just 20 minutes away from the border.
The last time I crossed with a bunch of friends to see a concert, (after being detained for over an hour), 1 of our group was not allowed to cross, and no reason was given. We told them to fuck off and we all went home.

(3,282 posts)And no one feels like they can do anything about it. They put up all of those cameras downtown for the G20, and promised us they'd all come down, but of course, they haven't. Then they said that oh, don't worry, they're not being used. I call bullshit.
I'm so ready for Harper and his corrupt closed circle to be gone. He campaigned on being open and transparent, and he's got to be the most closed-off administration I can ever remember. Silence from his caucus, silence from scientists, silence from his subordinates.
The new round of scandals are too big for everyone to be distracted by Rob Ford's antics.
