David Cameron quits as Conservative MP for Witney

Former UK PM David Cameron has stood down as an MP, triggering a by-election in his Oxfordshire seat of Witney.

Mr Cameron, 49, who resigned as prime minister after June's EU referendum, said he did not want to be a "distraction" for new PM Theresa May

He said Mrs May had "got off to a cracking start", while she praised his "great strides" on social reform...

Speaking in his constituency, he said it had been a "great honour" to be an MP for the area, but said it would be difficult for him to remain on the backbenches without becoming "a big distraction and a big diversion" from the work of the new government.

that some people have been speaking of Daniel Hannan as a potential successor in Witney.

Please please no; I know that won't be the top concern that everyone will have about Cameron's resignation; but since Witney is very nearby to me (next door to the constituency where I live), I don't need the absolute devil in my backyard.

Anyway. That's David Cameron for you. Gambles the country's entire future; loses; and runs away.

Let's face it, Cameron is resigning to make money, from lectures, directorships, consultancies etc. Which was inevitable, but I didn't expect him to do anything notable in the Commons, and to step down at the next election.

But the convenient shift of the biggest anti-EU (and anti-government in general) shit the Tories have from the Brussels gravy train, after he pulled the emergency cord, to a safe seat and a chance at advancement in the UK government will be appalling, if it happens.

David Cameron is the worst Prime Minister in my lifetime, and what's even more sickening is that Theresa May is on course to be even worse.

One Larry Sanders - brother of Bernie!

The Lib Dem candidate is Liz Leffman, who's a district councillor, as is Labour's, Duncan Enright (who earlier called for Corbyn's resignation, which might make things awkward on the stump). Both have run against Cameron in Witney before (and lost, obviously - Leffman came second in 2005 and Enright trailed Cameron by over 25,000 votes in the last GE, which could make for some fun tactical voting scenarios). The English Democrats are putting up Winston McKenzie, a boxer whose main claim to fame, other than being a serial election loser and having joined and left just about every UK political party, is having been booted off Celebrity Big Brother toot sweet for very vocal homophobia. I don't think UKIP have a candidate yet, though Liz Jones has offered to throw her hat in the ring.

Courts is a barrister and also a district councillor, and looks like Sue Perkins' brother: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-37447086

I suspect the LibDems will be quite pleased if they end up second place. It will continue there post-referendum electoral run.

For the last electoral results...

He is a nutter. Probably in the Guinness Book of Records somewhere for having lost elections for more parties than anyone else. He must also be one of very, very few black immigrants ever to join a far-right racist party.

UKIP might split off some votes from the Tories, but I don't think the English Democrats would get enough votes to make a difference there.

Some anti-Brexit-ers had been hoping that there could be an anti-Brexit unity candidate for that seat; but, while there might have been a very slight chance of that if Dangerous Dan Hannan had been the Tory candidate, there is really no chance of anyone stepping down for a unified campaign against Mr. No-One's-Ever-Heard-of-Him.

I would expect the Liberal Democrats to make enough gains to finish 2nd, but nowhere near enough to dislodge the Tories from an extremely safe seat.
