It is an alluring vision. Unfortunately, it is precisely wrong. The election of Mr Trump has transformed Brexit from a risky decision into a straightforward disaster. For the past 40 years, Britain has had two central pillars to its foreign policy: membership of the EU and a special relationship with the US.
The decision to exit the EU leaves Britain much more dependent on the US, just at a time when America has elected an unstable president opposed to most of the central propositions on which UK foreign policy is based.

The refugee row underlined the extent to which Mrs May and Mr Trump have clashing visions of the world. Even when it comes to trade, the supposed basis for their new special relationship, the two leaders have very different views.

(41,208 posts)One of my biggest original reasons for being a strong supporter of Remain was the knowledge that Brexit could make us dependent on Trump 'if godforbid he gets in', or future presidents of the same type.
Of course, Donald Trump is a disaster for everything!

(7,244 posts)we've long been in thrall to the US. When there's a relatively benign US administration, people are somewhat relaxed about it and the griping's subdued, but we're still subsidiary, and there was a lot of squawking about TTIP etc. when it looked like we'd be dragged into it. It's more of a threat to our sovereignty and security than the EU's ever been - we do have representation within the EU, despite the myths, we just haven't been very good at exploiting it and capitalizing on it, to say the least.
The insidious situation now is we have a very weak prime minister and a shambles of a government at pretty much all levels - we're ripe for the picking for a predatory asshole like Trump and the US multinationals he'll champion. If we couldn't make our voice heard as an EU member state, we have no chance faced with a US takeover.
Treasure the NHS while we have it.
Sorry, I'm being depressing again.
