London 2012: Olympic missiles sites confirmed

Ground-based air defence systems will be sited at six locations in and around London during the Olympic Games, despite opposition from residents.

The missiles - including rapier and high-velocity systems - will be in place from mid-July, the MoD confirmed.

Plans also include the use of helicopter carrier HMS Ocean, which will be moored in the River Thames.

RAF Typhoon jets will be stationed at RAF Northolt, and Puma helicopters at a Territorial Army centre in Ilford.

It's all rather depressing.

My cousin, who lives in London, tells me that she's coming up North for the duration.

Bet she's not the only one.

who live in Kentish Town NW5 and work in W1. Thev've been advised to add an hour to their journey to work. You could leg it it less than that.

The roads signs on the outskirts of London advising of severe disruption to traffic in central London during the Olympics have been in place for weeks now.

who have been advised by their bosses to stay at home for the duration, and work from home on their computers - this will risk less work disruption than their spending most of the day trying to get through the maze.

I will be avoiding London during that time!

First week is to be spent in the Lake District and the second pottering around the house
(or maybe even the in-laws house for a few days).

I don't care if it rains - I'll still be chilling out rather than muttering about all
the numpties cluttering up the commute.

He can't stay home, as he works with at-risk youth.

He's looking forward to his commute about as much as vivisection.

What happened at Munich was horrible.

And since then there was the domestic terror attack at Atlanta in 1996.

Unfortunately an enormously crowded international event, including competition between nations, will attract some of the wrong people, especially if it takes place in a capital city.

One reason I wasn't too happy about London being chosen for the event.

But it's still sad that the Olympics have become so politicized, sometimes reaching these violent extremes. I suppose there were always political intrusions, even in ancient times, but still it's pretty depressing.

After all, politicians have always said the nuclear missiles would keep the peace.

If they ever fire the bloody things they are more than likely to hit the wrong target

As some wag on the Army forum ARRSE commented

Will BAE be sponsoring the Rapiers?

I can see it now, a SAM site with a big sponsorship banner… 'Rapier - missing targets since 1982!'
