Tory strategists confident large gains for pro-Remain parties is 'the people' telling them to get...

...with Brexit'

he Conservative party has confirmed that losing hundreds of council seats to parties that want to remain in the EU is the surest sign yet that the people just want them to get on and deliver Brexit.

With the Tories losing almost 500 councillors, and the pro-remain parties of the Lib Dems and Greens picking up most of those, senior party figures have decided they know exactly what the electorate is trying to say.

CCHQ strategist Simon Williams told us, “The people have spoken, and by handing significant gains to the Lid Dems and Greens they are telling us they are frustrated with our inability to deliver Brexit.

“If you are unhappy with us not yet delivering Brexit, then of course you’re going to vote for a party that wants to cancel it altogether.

I know that this is satire - but hell it is the truth.... both Labour and the Tories are at it. A vote for the lib dems was a vote for Brexit?!?!?! Since Never. These people are insane.

The fact that both Tories and Labour favor some version of Brexit should result in a resurgence for the LibDems and Green parties in the UK.

Labour has been using virtually the same spin to explain their own local election losses, and it's a totally false narrative.

Demoralised grassroots support, local failings and a terrible policy on leaving the EU that tries to be all things to all men but alienates everyone have all contributed to Labour losing seats in the area where I live. Labour lost North East Derbyshire to the Tories, Bolsover to independents and they lost seats in Sheffield to both Liberal Democrats and Greens.

"It stands to reason that the most extreme Leave party, UKIP, losing 145 of its 176 councillors just shows how popular their position is".

4. 100 Tory MPs would never support "anything close to a customs union" after the elections

Just to show how accurate Newsthump is:

Separately, senior Tory MPs insisted that any deal struck with Labour that involved anything close to a customs union – Corbyn’s central demand in the talks – would be rejected by more than 100 of the party’s MPs, who would see it as a betrayal of May’s promises on Brexit.

Nigel Evans, executive secretary of the 1922 Committee of Tory backbenchers, said: “If there is a compromise that turns out to be a kind of ‘Brexit in name only’ involving anything close to a customs union there would be more than 100 Tory MPs who would never support it, particularly following the local elections.”
...
Alanna Vine, chair of Cheadle Conservative Association, said: “Our party’s failure to deliver Brexit has been toxic. If we don’t change course – immediately cease discussions with Corbyn about us remaining in the EU customs union and stop endlessly extending our leaving date – our party will be wiped out for a generation.”

Alexander Curtis, chair of Hertford and Stortford Conservative Association, said: “Colleagues have paid dearly for our prime minister’s failure to believe in and back the decision of 17.4 million voters to leave the EU. People are sick of our incompetence and inability to deliver and to honour our promises. We will be annihilated in the Euro elections if we break another promise and adopt Corbyn’s customs union plan.”
